Start out by picking a light source/sources. After you have that start adding the highlights and shadows. I am not sure if this is anime or what not so as far as shading goes i'm not sure what you are looking for but that smoke... and the gray around it (shadow maybe???) doesn't look too pleasing too the eye... almost as if it was a big dust bunny laying there and a small light from the bottom to the right... hope I helped some. Others I am sure can get more into detail in this. There was a thread a long while back on shading I think it was... if I find it I will link it.
