As I work on this new exercise today, I will post images of the main stages of the process.

This is the first stage, took about 15 minutes, where I defined the main areas with a wide high opacity brush.

Here is the second stage. It is 2 am right now and I am literally falling asleep as I paint this. The rest will follow tomorrow.

Just wondered if this was based on a picture
or came off the web or a scan, or if you are
building it all from scratch. Looks good, for
a straight from the brain painting.

Great

Max & Lexmir: : Thanks for the comments!

Max: I should dedicate this picture to you!

Damon: Yes, it is based on a frame of the movie. I have the DVD on pause as a reference.

Anyway, tonight I had just enough time to finish Gandalf. I guess Frodo will have to wait for tomorrow. TIme for bed now...

AH! Finally today I found an hour to finish this exercise. All together I think this one took me the longest time (3.5 hours), compared to the other ones I did.

Max: Yes! Yes! I will. Next I gotta draw Legolas. I promise. And if I don't... you can spank me!

Krobar: Sometimes I want to eat mine too... when I see the stuff Mr. Spooge squeezes out of it.

Yah bob: LOL!

Everybody else: Thank you.

Well, although you do kick major ass, I do see a couple of errors that could be touched up. Frodo's right eye (farthest to the back of the picture) looks squished and not realistic in comparison to the rest of the painting. His other eye is really wide open but that one is like half-closed :O. Nice work though man.

This rock! Very clean detail on hairs and face of gandalf.

How big is the original painting?

On a further note, I love how you're beginning to stylize these pictures and not let yourself be limited by the original frame. I like how you did the colors on Gandalf's face. I tried doing one of Bilbo last week but quickly got frustrated. You must have a lot of patience for these!

Beowulfthefallen: You were correct.. my wife had noticed that too. I opened up the file and changed it a bit. It should be better now. Thank you for the useful comment.

3.5 Hours?! It takes me 3.5 hours to do the first step you posted and it still comes out looking like a blind drunken dwarf drew it in a dark cave...

Man, I can't wait for more of your stuff, I have shown this to everyone I know and then random people on the street. I'll go to mordor and back with you if you give me 1/4 of your talent. I'll be checking your website daily

oh btw if you didn't draw any conclusions by now I think that's one fine piece of art, that thing should be on a flat screen $10,000 HDTV hanging on the Metropolitan Museum...yes, I like it, I like it very much, I'd feel like I'm kissing a lot of ass right about now if that thing wasn't really so beautiful.

im going to go drown myself now.

tie my wacom tablet to my ankels and jump into
the bay.

but before i go let me ask one question...i thought
we were suppose to start with a sketch and then
fill in the color shapes?

Spectra: 1450x615 (not too big.. I shold have painted it at a higher res)

starglider2: Man, if I could paint this stuff right off my head.. I would be rich! I used a frame from the movie DVD as a reference. My neck still hurts from looking over at the tv.

Beowulfthefallen: Yes, I noticed it too.. from the first sketch to this last one, my technique is changing to a more detailed and refined final look.

Nyqvist: I am almost proud of myself thinking that my work has inspired other artists.

FFNeX: Your comments are definitely something! It's the second time your throw me on floor laughing! LOL! Let's go to Mordor together.. wait wait.. I got it: from now on, we will be known as the Fellowship of the Tablet! If I believed I had a sould, I would sell it to the devil )or Sauron.. you pick one) tomorrow in exchange for the ability to come up with ideas and composition for my illustrations.
Because one thing is for sure.. I can't come up with any original idea for my paintings.

Anyway.. I might work on a new pic soon. Keep the comments coming.. and if you have any pic inspired by LOTR, post it! I want to see.

Thanks for the comment anyway, way cool.

dizzypope: Sometimes I feel like jumping from the bridge too.. when I look at Frazetta or Bisley's stuff... but to be sure.. I will tie myself to my big monitor.. that should get the job done

As for the preliminary stages of a drawing, I recently found myself more comfortable with abandoning line drawing in favor of shapes and volume. Somehow if I start sketching the drawing with lines and then go in and color the shapes, the final result does not look as spontaneous as when I just use a large brush to define the main areas of the drawing and then work on refining them. But this is just the way it works for me lately.

Hey there, Rob. Fine work you're showing us. Just wanted to thank you for the portrait-tut, it gave me a safe kick-start on my self-portraits. Keep it up!
