Starting a new picture... I'm approaching it quite differently than I usually do by completeing a pretty detailed line drawing before starting to paint... Here's the start:

Hello
It looks very imaginarily so far.
I think this is a combination of fantasy and scifi.
It's interesting that these guys with modern helmets shoot with bows.
The background is very promisingly.
Especially the Building - if it is one
I also can imagine a cool backgroundstory.
I look forward to see the finished painting.
Very good job, thought.

I can really appreciate the way you try different things and tap into different subject matters. Its like you've mastered portrait illustration, now your moving towards Sci-Fi fanstasy. Its a refreshing transition, at least for me to see! The one thing I really like lately are your compositions, they seem all seem to be like a moment in time (if that makes sense) Almost like your watching a documentary or something
As for the crits the only thing that bugs me is the spider women's hesd. The tilt just seems to downward. Maybe tilt it more upwards? Anyways, great pic! I can't wait to see the progression steps! |

I looked a second time on this picture.
And: I think the perspective of the two bowes is off. Maybe I am wrong but if you look exactly you see that the left bow bends right and the right left.
I agree with the tilting head. |

I'm loving this so far. Everything about it is great - the composition, the slightly-cartoonish-but-still-realistic linework, and the way the spider's head tilts is just awesome, it gives it a very haunting and disturbing look. I can't wait to see some color in this. What kind of a color scheme are you planning? |

i think it might be a bit more interesting if you moved the archer on the left a bit closer to the camera/viewer or whatever. |

looking good so far. THe finished product should be quite cool Also the archers do seem off aim a little, but not a significant amount that it matters (they could be aiming). The set up is a bit strange though, as if the spider was just in the perfectly wrong spot at the wrong time. I mean there's one walkway to the spot where the spider is, another walk way going off in another direction might give it the feeling of... randomness (I don't know how else to put it).
Otherwise this is going to look great when it's done. |

Looks like a story is forming here! Right now, I'd interpret it as if spiderman is forced to either die by arrows or take his chances and jump the cliff.
Though I see you've chosen to start off with a yellow colour scheme, which sets quite a calm tone I think.
Hey - is that a small bird/insect/plane I see sketched in front of the bow? Update, please |

Actually this Spidy is not a he ... ...and I'm not sure what will make the arrows fly or stay nocked. The fall for Spidy is not great so she could jump, but she chooses to stay... Perhaps she must give a correct answer or password. Haven't quite got it yet, but, if the arrows fly, it is a moment in time separating two totally different time events.

Very cool looking, I want a bow and arrow like that!
Not sure, but her left forearm looks oddly bent. |

Just looking at the bows, usually the arrow is fired while sitting on top of the thumb, on the inside of the bow. Of course it makes no difference to the great pic, but yeah, thats it.. |

Yep... you're right... I thought it didn't quite look right. I used this photoref of my 10 year old, but I flipped the picture cause I needed the left arm/elbow jutting toward the viewer on that side.
I'm gonna fix it...

hmmm... but I'm still a bit confused, because even with the picture flipped, my daughter still seems to have the arrow on the wrong side of the bow...
(going to look at some photos....)
I looked at a bunch of archery photos, and it seemed to be split... Some with arrows on one side and others on the other side... |

I think resting the shaft on the thumb is most common. But it looks like your girl's bow has a notch to rest the arrow on. So in the reference photo the shaft is really resting on the middle of the bow. On your rendition, the notch is gone. I wouldn't think it should matter none, though. |

Well... I changed it so that the arrow rests against the other side of the bow - the outside, rather than the inside. Thinking about it - think of the fabulous archer in LOTR - it seemed to me that a serious archer would want to be able to nock his arrow on that side for speed... so that seems to be the way it should be...
The last image above shows the change... closeup in Detail 1
Now... gotta start on the background structures and lighting...

to be honest i don't think it matters so long as when you have the arrow slotted in the string that the one tail fin bit/feather that sticks out horizontally, sticks out on the far side of the bow (so that it doesn't hit the bow on relese) |

Hi eyewoo,
I think, the problem with the bow has to do with the perspective on it. You show too much of the side-planes of the bow. A second point is the texture on the bow above the horizon should direct downwards to the horizon. As third IMO you should rotate the hand that holds the bow.
To have a better idea of what I'm talking about here is a little paintover - not perfect, only showing the direction:
Besides this - great work. |
