I'm teaching myself Maya 4 right now, and this is my first serious attempt to model something. I'm pretty much a complete newbie when it comes to 3D, since I only painted textures in the past.
Anyway, after fumbling with learning 3D for about 3 months, this is what I have so far. It's my baby step into the world of 3D.
I modelled her with polygons. For animation I'll be replacing this model with a sub'D version. Her ears and neck are not done yet. There are all kinds of proportion mistake on her eyes and jawline too.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

thats a pretty solid 'baby step'
apart from a couple of 5-sided and 3-sided polygons, thats pretty cool.
If anything, maybe play with the proportions - see what its like changing the distance between the bottom lip and the chin
The shape of the nose is very constant too - quite straight. maybe play with varying the thickness and different points - feel your nose and you'll see what I mean. People don't normally look like that unless they've had a nose-job.
I assume Princess Ruu is an established character or something so I don't know how flexible it is.
nice job though :] |

Hey I'm learning maya as well switched from 3dsmax actually, just curious could you be more specific on how you did her? I mean you said you did her with polies? what primitive did u start with ur not thinking polygons as nurbs right heh dunno tell me Pretty sexy |

mt- thanks for the crit. It's going to take a while to tweak her to perfection. I'm actually not trying to go for super realism. My goal if more like an idealized look, similar to that of Final Fantasy VIII or Koudelka. I like the Japanese sensibility when it comes to beauty. Total realism kinda bores me once the initial "wow" factor wears out.
Princess Ruu is her:
It's a painting I did a few months ago. I used it as the frontal image plane, and I had a profile image plane I did too.
Fuchs- Thanks! Maybe you should surf some of the 3D specific sites like cgtalk.com, because I see heads there that makes mine look like shit all the time.
gigatron- I didn't start with a primitive. Here's what I did:
1)I prepared frontal and profile image planes, with the frontal topology planned out. I had a 3/4 view one with the topology planned out too, but I can't find that file for some reason.
2)I create a polygon that matches the front of the head(half of it). Then, I just start splitting that polygon with the topology I planned.
3)Pull the newly created topology back and start tweaking it into a 3D head.
4)split more and refine.
This method is based on the one from thehobbitguy.com. Dave is amazing, and his tutorial practically changed my life as a 3D newbie. The only difference with my method is that I plan the topology out before hand, and I split from the front instead of the profile. I also split with a lot more detail than he does--which makes it slower to pull out into 3D, but if you know exactly what you want in your head, it's not too much of a problem. |

WOW
vvvery nicely done. I usually don't work with polygons, and i haven't experimented with organic modelling, but seeing this/with the technique I'm tempted to.
thank you for sharing! |

Looking at the render, I'd have to say that the nose is a little thin just below the eyes. Look at the tasty painting and compare. The model needs a bit of fleshing out there, because at the moment the nose looks like its like skin strung over a fencepost. (overexaggeration to the extreme!)
I like you paintings of girls, the one with Dr. Bang had the same 'innocence' to it.
Hope that helps. |

Hi Lunatique:
Glad to c your CG girl here!Like your princess very much. Those two refrence pic you painting is photorealistic.
I feel the 45 angle perspective veiw is more important than front and side one.It can help you to determine the height of the eyebrow and nose. But i found some mistakes in the bridge of nose of your model,it's too sharp. And maybe the bridge of nose of your girl need more line.look this: http://www.cgtalk.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=77233

Hey, thanks for the praises and the crits!
Nice to see you here, Roy!!
Guys, meet Roy. He's a kickass 3D modeller. That link he attached is his work, and caused quite a stir at cgtalk.com! I just visited him in ShengZhen a few weeks ago too. |

Thoroughly humbled by your work. The model is looking amazing and the painting is beautiful. I love her nose, but I guess I'm just weird like that.
Keep the updates coming :] |

I finished her ears.
There are still many things wrong with her. I haven't worked in all the crits yet. I'll do that next, and then get started on the hair.

Impressive...how'd you get your mesh so clean? My head keeps the edge-loops, but is a lot more squiggly than yours, which looks like it's been laid out on a grid. Although I notice yours isn't perfectly quadded.
The ears are pretty good, although they seem a little too flat where they enter the head. Whereas mine stuck out too far, yours stick out too little...

Catfish- Hmm. I think my mesh is cleaner because I tweak it to be clean(smooth curves, squares whenever possible..etc). The topology itself is the most important, but I'm kind of obsessive about cleaniness and order, so I try to make mine clean. It's also good for smoothing because if all your faces are similar size and shape, it smooths a bit better.
I know what you mean about the ear. I based it on my GF's ears, and hers are like that. |

looks nice luna, i wonder if the eyes aren't too far into the head, or perhaps it is the nose that is too protuberant. nice work though i was wondering how it'd go and it seems to go quite well |
