Hey Luna!
Real nice pic, I love the character closeups, real nice rendering there.
If you want my comments, here they are (not that it means your pic isn't good, but these are just points *I think* would improve the pic, in my stupid worthless know-nothing oppinion).
In general, I would saturate things up a little, looks a little gray... flattens the work up a little. I would darken the wall behind the characters to make the characters not blend in with it as much, giving it also a tint of blue from the sky from the shaded part. Putting in some bounce light would help here also, where direct sunlight from a surface would bounce that lit, colored surface's color onto other neighbouring surfaces, getting a better feel of depth and positioning in 3D space.
The shadows are nice and add a lot, but its value is even throughout the shaded area. Again, the bounce light concept would add a lot here, where you get less light reaching areas where there are less neighbouring faces contributing to light diffusion and dispersion local to that area. For instance, the shadow under the lap/butt of the central sitting character should be quite darker than the rest of the open-space shadows, as less light is being reflected to this enclosed area. Still on the shadows, the standing girl on the middle left has a shadow going straight down in the middle of her, which isn't optimally interesting... as opposed to an angled sunlight direction crossing diagonally... which upon further inspection is ok because it's from a vertical object/statue (as opposed to a ceiling/covering oriented surface). Light is also being cast on her left side from direct sunlight, but the wall behind her does not reflect this.
I find the lighting confusing on that same girl mentioned above (for instance), where the sunlight is not casting shade/shadow under her breasts (which seem ample). This indicates that the sunlight is about 45 degrees from horizon-height... but the sunlight/atmospheric color doesn't show this, as it's more the color of bright midday. (anal retentive? yes... yes...)
I would perhaps add some very small specular highlights from the sun onto the small details of the armor and get some more shading showing form a little better on things like the arrow-holster on the ground (whatever that is called).
Just my 2 cents, I hope it helps out.
Cheers mate. Keep up the excellent work.
[edited some miscommunications]

Hey, thanks for the crits, you guys.
I usually have mixed feelings about posting in WIP, since it's hard to crit a piece that's not finished. Sometimes, I get crits about things I haven't done yet, but intend to, and sometimes I get crits about things I didn't even think about--which is why I post in WIP.
I agree with all the crits, and most of them are in the back of my head already as I work towards finishing them. It's definitely too static right now, and I will fix that in the next few days.
Again, thanks for the detailed crits. You guys rock. |

Looking better Luna! You're missing some depth in the image, because despite the complex shadows structure, the basic lighting in the entire forground is the same(id est; the darkness is the same throughout). Throw in some variation. On the skin tones especially it'd be good to see some warmer/cooler colors. Be bold! Basically I'm just noticing that its very neutral in value and color range. Very nicely rendered, and the anatomy seems good! |

awesome work.. especially on the characters.. the only obvious thing that i'm sure you are planning to work on soon is the BG and the depth..
other than that this is amazingly good
cant wait to see it finished

looks good luna... so when the hell you getting back to bay area... i wanna get a peak at those photo shoots
Hehe, anyway, looking real good. the tatoo designs etc. are looking very neat
one thing that i'd like to point out is the hairlines need a bit work, they just don't look like the right shape, defys gravity, and not transitional enough I guess.mainly on the right two. The skull of the very right guy (self poratrait? ) seems to be cut off.
hoping to see you finish this soon... one thing that you may want to work on in the future is the noses. all of your noses seem to look the ame in this picture. maybe they're all from the same family, but.. just thought i'd point that out for future pieces. |
