Here is a piece I roughed out yesterday as a potential contribution to the "Concept Design" book I've been working on with my friends. I'll post some updates here over the next week or so. This piece started as a still I sketched from Pearl Harbor as seen in the Pearl Harbor planes thread. I just started sketching over the top of that one in PS7 for about 2 1/2 hours and this is where I am now. Hope you enjoy the process. I'll probably sketch a little more in PS on it and then if I like the direction I'll make a print to sketch an accurate perspective line drawing over to correct the obvious problems in this one. I'll post that too if I get that far.
Another idea.
Next update.

Hi Scott, these pics are amazing. Your Pear Harbour pics are very inspiring (now I'm working on one myself - I hope it will be at least half as good, as yours). Thanks for this inspiration.
Imo the big plane has a little fault. The right front-wing looks too short to me - mmm.. in consequence also the right back-wing. I did a quick paintover to show what I mean, because my english is to bad to explain. I hope you don't mind.
I can't wait to see it finished. |

francmidi, yes I know. I have not done the final perspective drawing yet. This is just a loose sketch at this point. Once I have a compostion I like I'll do a decent drawing and correct all of the perspective problems.
Here is another along the same lines that I roughed out on Wednesday. I'll update it as well as I progress. I'm about 1 1/2 hours into this one so far.

Hi Scott.
On a purely design-technical level; that's not a ground effect aircraft is it?! It looks sorta like one, but the wings are wrong if it is....It doesn't really matter..
Nice ones!

Sukhoi, no it is not a ground effects plane, it's just quirky.
Here is the latest. I tightened up the perspective a bit on the big plane. Deleted the ship on left behind bridge, middle two pillars of bridge and the twin "rabbit ear" tail fins. Added, air brakes to make Capt.Flushgarden happy, went to single rear tail fin, and started to play around with forms at the horizon oh and played with the color and water sum. That's it for tonight.

OMG. I really like these. They are great designs grounded in a realistic setting. |

Very nice! Just a thought- maybe make the "heat blur" slightly rippled? |

Here is the latest for this one. I've replaced the old bridge with something a bit more modern, which meant reworking the water. A few tweaks to the plane and the overall color of the piece. If I ever finish this one, I plan on working up the bridge with more detail and defining the city more as well. I'm not sure it is a keeper yet?
Just for you buyuu, I hope the heat from the engine looks better now.

gigatron, thanks.
Here is the update on the green piece. I still have a lot to do on this one as you can see. I'm planning on doing a couple of days of concept sketching of boats to drop into this piece. I'll put those up too when I get to them. I'll be populating the building and adding much more detail. I am happy with the general lighting and color of this piece so far. As usual any comments welcomed.

Yes please, that's nice!
However it semms that the reflection in the water is too far 'down', or atleast a tad bit exaggerated. However it's really nice to see some actual reflections rather that simple mirrors!!
Btw, check your mail, Scott.

I think the planes look awesome, really cool design. The only thing I could say is why would "superfast" planes need to chase a boat that looks somewhat slow, you may want to make the boat look more hi tech and maybe some green fire stuff coming out of it. |

Sukhoi,
I'll double check the reflection before I finish it off. A you can see I've already changed the building from what it started as in the sketch. The reflection is of the old design.
lalPOOO,
Who said it was going to be a long chase?
Arkenoid, Thanks I'm trying.
Here is the first in a series of boat sketches I'm going to be doing for my "How to Draw Vehicles" book this summer. This one is done in all traditional media, verithin prisma pencil, nupastel chalk, marker and gouache. I cleaned up the scan a bit, but not much. Original size of the boat sketch is 11" front to back. I consider this first one back into traditional media a warm up. I hope to have some much better stuff to add to this thread next week after I get a few more under my belt. Until then, hope it entertains you.

The Reflection looks correct to me. There's something for you to put in those perspective tutorials. When they find out how easy it is, they are gonna kick you for not telling them sooner! haha
Nice work as usual! Thanks for sharing this with us.
Sukhoi: The reflection looks ok to me. The rule is that it gets reflected the same distance as the real thing. So the waterline to the top of the tower, should be the same distance as the waterline to the top of the tower in the reflection. That is of course, considering that the water is perpendicular to the object. As it is. |

Hi Scott, beautiful work...very complete. I have no crits, just a question(s). The Japanese aircraft appear futuristic (I particularly like the jet variant) but they seem loosely based on some experimental super fighters that were being worked on towards the end of WWII...true? If so, to what extent do you draw inspiration from historical and/or "real" stuff in your work? Just curious, thank you |

A real pro.. *cries*
Honestly though, with the planes i like the very first picture the most (i like the non-cluttered scenery and the metal thing instead of jet engine) |
