I always imagine two magnets as the shoulders and the hips... they should always oppose one another... for example, if your shoulders are tilted up and to the right, then the hips will be tilted up and to the left... thats a pretty two-dimensional example, but if you think about it in three dimensions you can achieve stunning flow in your characters....
heres a really badly sketched example...
