eyewoo: Nice colours and perspective. Great style. I really am enjoying your latest pics. Good work. The building at the front left looks wonky. The major horizontal base plane seems to angle upward, as if there is another horizon. I'm assuming of course that you intended it to be parallel with other objects in the scene. Those background city lights are a great addition for the sake of scale and perspective. good job!
NeFF: To draw perfectly straight lines with any of the brush tools, simply make a mark at your starting point, then hold down shift and make the end mark of the line. Photoshop will draw a straight line between these points with whichever brush you have selected. To continue drawing more connecting straight lines just press shift again… simple.
To draw a shape with straight lines and sharp corners, like a triangle for example, just make a selection with the Polygonal Lasso tool, set to point by point mode. Then paint in the selection. Other shapes with curves can be done using the pen tool. On a separate working layer, draw your shape with the pen tool. Goto the Paths pallete (usually docked with the layers pallete). Hold down ctrl, and left click on the path in the paths pallete. This will load a selection of that path shape, which you can use to paint within. |

NeFF...
I have a template with no background layer... a LARGE circle with a line every 6 degrees or so. It lives in a separate file which I simply dump onto its own layer in whatever picture I'm working on... |

Philip, as I do not have many environmental pieces under my belt, take these comments for what they are worth. I really liked the first rough sketches. The palette has a hip retro feel with the strong forground tree graphics. I think that the current direction of the piece is tending towards what a friend of mine calls the "3D curse". It is starting to look like a stiff 3D rendering. Where are the roads for acces to the buildings? etc.. In my opinion if you were to start with a stronger drawing indicatiing all the elements of the piece it might come together better. You might be planning to add more texture and designed elements to pull it together, if so, ignore my last comments. IMHO try not to rely too much on the PS drawing tools ie. shapes etc....
Nice step by step, I'll check back to see the finished thing, I'm sure you will pull it together nicely as you usually do. |

Scott... Appreciate your comments... Haven't got to the roads yet... understand the 3D curse thing (no 3D in this pix)... haven't pulled it together yet... hate planning it out before starting (so boring doing it then)... am certainly planning more texture and design elements... Please do check back... I love the PS drawing tools and quick mask... they are the essence of digital IMHO ... 'course I'm pretty wierd about that sort of thing...
EDIT-- Refreshed the above image with the start of the roads...

Ian... The working rez is 5000 x 1888 including the gray throw-away border, which won't be included in the final image.
Details, details, details... it's said God is in the details...
Its actually not all that detailed... I think it just looks that way because of the high rez. |

Just about done... For anyone interested, I've put together an animated gif from the initial start upto this point... not the finished point as yet, but it might be interesting to view... It is 820K so prepare for a big download...

man philip I love this work. I hope to someday be where you are now. Your stuff is just so amazing. I love the fantasy/3d style too. Really makes things interesting. I want to try to do some buildings and stuff of my own in PS but and somewhat unsure as to how to do it. I'm sure I'll figure it out. You really inspire me man. Once again fabulous work. |

Yea, I liked that the trees led you into the picture, but... it just seems like a pretty obvious way to do it. I'm trying some other things first... may get back to the trees... |
