Well, first you have to save your image as a gif or jpeg, not in painter's Rif format.
then, upload it to a server, and post it in the following format (use square brackets instead of the round ones)

(img)imageurl(/img)

where imageurl contains the full path, for example- http://www.imageserver.com/mine/image.jpg

to expand a bit on Bilbo's, here's what the display code line should look like if:

1. the server's host name is wonka.com

2. the directory on the server in the host name area in which the image was stored is called mypix

3. the image file name is called bugger.jpg

I used ASCII codes to put in the square brackets, so the code line should look exactly as below...

So... to sum up, you need an account on an ISP's server somewhere in the world and an FTP program to upload your pics to your account on that server... Once you get that far, then structure of the above code line will work for you...

Good lucj with it...

Good but Geocities doesn't allow remote linking like most of the free web space providers. ALTHO, some people here managed to find a way to trick that bugger of a problem. I recall changing the extention of the filename to .txt . You might want to make a small search on the subject in the threads (look on the upper right corner of this forum for all the convenient links).

Be sure that the path of your link exists. For example, http://www.geocities.com/thestateofbliss/norsman.gif doesn't exists. There is an image in your folder but it's http://www.geocities.com/thestateofbliss/norsman.GIF
Note the caps of the image file name. Some servers/browser differenciate files with small caps and high caps. Try to always use small caps for all your files wether it's the name or the ending.

One other thing ; instead of creating a new post in your thread everytime something is not working, you can edit your post with the Edit/Delete Post icon on top of each posts. (Sheet of paper + pencil)

Babble babble blah ! hope that helps
