monolith's bike + all the akira fanart around inspired me to whack up a quick model of my own to try a few things ive learned. total time spent on this is 5 or 6 hours i think. btw this is only my first ever proper model (appart from the tuts that came with max) so be as harsh as you can. i really really need to improve. here goes:

He he, I get to be first here. Like it a lot so far. Obviously I can see some places that can be worked on some more: Like the two cylinder shapes on either side of the bike's seat should be, well cylinders. I do like how well it turned out for just a few hours work. Trying to get ref for the bike can be a bit hard for some angles. Like the cockpit area, which you've pulled of pretty darn well. The problem I run into is that the bike in the movie is pretty consistant, but you only see so much of it at certain angles. And in the manga you see a lot more, but the bike changes as Otomo-sensei draws it throughout the series. I don't know. All I do know is your model came together pretty damn cool. Keep it up, and this could be a great piece to texture!

im taking orders now. one yellow one coming up. do you want a gatling gun with it?! ^__^
@ValarianROOT i dont think they are supposed to be oval?! i thought that was a bit weird too, but yeah they werent on the ref image i used. wait ill post that later on when i find it. i kinda guestimated most of the bike, since the only ref i used was of the bike at a high angle. you could just see loadsa buttons and stuff so i just added a little monitor.
on a diferent note. i have two questions. how do i add profile to the tires and how do i make a glass material in 3ds max 4 |

My suggestions for your questions would be, now remember I haven't worked in Max 4 just 3:
For glass, just remove the color from the polys that make up the windshield. You should be left with just the properties of the solid and the light should react to it "similar" to glass. Don't know how you'd do that in Max though. As for adding profile to the tires, i would probably just add a bump map to it cause you'll never see the edge on it anyway. You might ask Anthony if he's still around here anywhere.

ok, there is another update, however id like to adress a small problem that i seem top have. i sat down and made a bump map and i applied it, and ( sorta figured most of it myself, im so happy bout that) but i seem to have trouble with the bump map, its looks quite cheesy and doesnt go around the tire fully, like you can see here:
does anyone know how to fix this, i cant get my head around it. ok the reference pic i promised to post is here too. this is the only ref used so far.
and finally to the updates. nothing much changd, i spent alot of time on the tire and trying to model it good, it turned out ok i guess but it could be better. well theres always a next time. i also spent some time getting some decent materials together and trying to get the right colour. well here goes

As a 3d user I can say:
WELL DONE!
It's a great try at a difficult model. A couple of things about the bike in question.
*The tires are pure racing tires without treads, so I'd make a worn rubber texture to fit on the tires.
*The side mirrors are the 'flares' that come from the front wheel.
*The entire front-end shell of the bike moves down and back ALOT when the rider sits on the bike. So you may want to make your portion moveable if you plan on later animating the bike.
*The bike's front headlight is flush mounted against the windshield.
*No 'rivets' or fasteners are of different colors.
*There are more controls on the 'riders hump' and the main guage screen is larger.
*The bike's color is close, but the reflectance is off. But that's really had to tell because you don't have anything in the scene to reflect off of the paint.
((make a large cylinder of about 26-32 segments and put a 2 or more color toned texture on the inside and then place your bike with in it to render))
Hope that helps! |

Hey, that's looking good so far...the only large problem I can see is that your bike is too short and the handlebars don't really match up with the design. Apart from that I think it is going well so far, I think I will try my hand at doing Kaneda's Bike, after all who wouldn't want that bike... |

One thing you should know that is really big, the right side of his bike (as if you were sitting on it)has no arm to the rear wheel. and the back wheel is a lot bigger than the front.
When he said race tyre, he means slicks. There is no tread what so ever. Good job so far though.

To fix the mapping on the tires, apply a cylindrical map instead of a planar. |

zak, what Drift Kid Runner meant was the rear tire 'support' arm is only on the bikes one side. There really isn't a 'set' of support arms.
I think I'll have to upload some of my DVD captures of the bike, so you'll have more and better reference. |

Wow, that's cool
Are you going to make an Akira model after you made the bike? |
