EDIT: Update at the bottom! Thanks.

Hi guys!

At school I'm currently working on a stopmotion project with two other guys. The story of the birth of this idea is weird and long so you'll get that another time.

We're nearing the phase of actual mattepainting and though you guys might have some insights.

A short, very short, overview:

The story is about this little girl who sits in her room drawing alongside her annoying little brother. He's harrasing her and she draws herself into a dreamworld with her favorite fantasy companion: A blue Rhino.

Once in the dreamworld the two friends go exploring.
Eventually the little brother enters the dream and destroys the nice cuddly fantasy with his robot wars and sci-fi terror. The two friends get attacked with lasers and such.
Finally the little girl gets angry and exits the fantasy world to give her annoying little brother a verbal beating. He wringes that he "just want's to play along". She feels remorse and let him play along as long as he "draws something 'NICE' (cute)"!!! The little brother draws a sunset and is allowed inside the fantasy world.
Ofcourse he cannot restrain himself from drawing robots and the battle will eventually start over.

Some random pictures:

Colour study:

An unedited filmframe from the fantasy world:

And a test matte:

And finally an unedited frame, where the Rhino pops into the girls room asking "where are we going today?":

As you can see we need to get some quite extensive matte work done. A sundown outside the window in the room, aswell as a nice bluish sky in the exterior shot.

I'm allready sketching along (as is my kolleagues Jonas and Kim), testing and whatnot, but we might benefit from the knowledge of you guys. So if you have anything to say about it, please be my guest !!!

I'll post more if there is interest: Storyboard perhaps and mroe model shots.

A preliminary test for the sky above a shot of the exterior. I don't have the matte element with me right now, but I will post it later.

Any thoughts or tips?

I was wondering when you were going to post something of this project that you were talking about earlier. I am overwelmed by the quality that you have done so far. I only wish that I could help you with the matte painting. I personally would love to see more and how you did it.

Looks great!

I really like the photo of the miniature room, neat lighting. And the models themselves look perfect for this kind of animation.

I can't offer you much guidance with the backgrounds/mattes, but maybe you should define a few color schemes that best express what you want to say and then use those accordingly. The test image (the valley) looks too colorful and confusing to me - I think the characters would stand out better if it were more monochrome and showed detail only where necessary. The motto by Einstein - "make everything as simple as possible but no simpler" - is pretty much what I'm saying

A matte in progress made by Jonas (my student colleague) and myself. The foreground is the "animation action" element.
Any last minute comments or ALARMS?

Basement: Thanks pal!
Yeah, I'll get you behind the scenes after my exam. Soon!

Balistic: Hehe, thanks.

Sfr: Define the colours that best describe the mood you say, eh?! Hmmm, We haven't realy done that....I guess. Bright and sunny, vast and open are the only keywords for this shot, and that's pretty much all we have. I'll try to remeber the detail issue (good one ) I would very much like to listen to you guys, but it's all moving so fast that I'll perhaps forget.....The colour thing is naggin me a bit though, i don't know if it would've helped though. I hope not 'cause there's not time enough to remake the lot. (I will remember next time though)

Ok, I'm a bit stressed now, hehe. I hope it made sense.
Thank guys!

Hey Sfr! You're qiuck huh?!
Ok, ignored for now.....hehe. Thanks!

New one.

I've been working on the left side, the cliffs and grass and stuff. The photo sky is just for reference, and will eventually be drawn. (to be able to control the whole 'expression' of the image.)

No alarm bells?

goody, goody, goody. Wow it works so well, *pats you on the back*. I am so happy that you reworked the left hand side looks much better now. The right hand side I think needs tweeking, perhaps just colour match. Looks great.
