I remembered that people have requested tutorials from me in the past, so here it is, my latest piece, still in progress.
For this tutorial, I'm using Painter 7.
Here are the steps I've gone through so far:
I just slather on paint with the palette knife, getting rid of the white areas.
I blend with one of the oil brushes(opaque round, I think)with resaturation set to zero. Then I start painting in the figure, using the same brush, except the resaturation is now turned up.
I block in the whole figure. This is all with the same brush. In fact, that's the only brush I've used in this session so far.
I block in the base colors I want.
I smooth out the figure a bit by blending(still same brush. Same trick with the resaturation).
Adding more detail.
Made some corrections, and added more detail.
Okay, that's the first half of the tutorial. I need to get some sleep now, but I'll finish this painting tomorrow and post the rest of the tutorial.

Here are the rest:
Realized that I was an ass for not doing a sketch first, I made some corrections, and then blocked in the different skin shades.
Painted in some of the bed and pillow.
Tweaked the background, and added more of the bed.
Painted in the walls.
Final details.
Now, I must get some sleep.

MOST excellent luna... I'll definately be giving painter another try after this... would you mind going into some more depths about what brush settings you use for the oil brush? Never been able to figure out what to do to make it look good...
again, really good tutorial luna! |

Nice tutorial.. Thanks.
1. Can you elaborate on your blending brushes in painter?
2. Is there any brushes in painter you can make just like the digital ones in photoshop? Id like to work with both
3. Anyone know how to keep painter from crashing? I downloaded the update patch but still crashes usually when I touch the layers.
....
Btw.. lets all share our favorite custom brushes in painter esp for painting and drawing!! If one wants.. mabe upload them or just give settings.
odd thing is that I find it easier to paint in photoshop but pref sketching in painter.. even with p7 which I just got.
But.. I really hate the cheap digital feel doing painterly works in photoshop even when using custom brushes. |

strata/Light-- I only used two brushes for this piece. Palette knife for the rough look in the background, and opaque round for everything else. I use my painting brush as blender too by turning the resaturation to zero and the bleed up. Tweak the feature accordingly too for /size/number of bristles. The pen pressure setting doesn't seem to work for me too well, so I rely on the opacity setting for the brush.
Basement bound- It's just a lot of zooming in and blend, that's all.
Light- yeah, I think the anatomy is probably a bit shaky. Can you point out which parts jump out at you? Thanks. |

Lunatique, that's beautiful. I wish I could do that.
Now, a question (it may sound dumb, but hey, that's me): when you say you "block" certain areas, what do you mean by that? |

de sade: I think he means just painting in the big blotches of the base values... blocking in your midtones, darks and lights... then from there you proceed to refine and add details to the values you've blocked in...
right loony? |

Luke_de_Sade- what strata said.
DeathJester- For this one, it's only 1280 x 1024, at 300 DPI. Hehe, for Tina to have a caucasian sister, it'd be a pretty interesting genetic anomaly! |

looks nearly like a photo. I Think i'll try this style more, RIght now i'm more into painted grunge though, tis grunge but i paint most of it with mouse and tablet... I like it because it makes me feel good using "paintbrushes" to do what people spend 10 min to do with photo's |

Thanks a lot for taking the time to post this tremendously interesting tutorial It's very cool to see so many stages in a painting and being able to really 'see' how you painted it.
The final image is gorgeous. |

seethemd- Of course there was reference. One simply don't just paint this kind of stuff out of one's head, unless that one is a master like the Spooge.
BiTMAP- I actually prefer the looser brush work, but I have a problem implementing it into my figure work. I suck.
black_fish- Thanks. I still have much to improve on. I feel kinda stupid posting this tutorial now, since I'm still so far behind where I need to be. |
