This is an image I've been working on off and on for the past few days.
I think it has improved a lot from where it started (thanks for the help, Prep !!!), but I'm not quite satisfied yet. So, does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve it?

All you ever see on this board is half naked viking women or grotesque, mutated, she-he's, or manga or superheroes. whatever.

I don't think I've ever seen a painting entiltled 'Defeated Businessman'.

The lighting looks a little strange to me.
The, uh, businessman facing us seem to have their lighting backwards. More shadows maybe.

The defeated one's head looks awful small as well.
It's a good start.

like the idea, composition and colors!
as elam replied already > those bussinesmen
need more shading to give a better volume.
maybe add some more detail in the outside
buildings (you even could lighten things up
outside with some brighter colors)
and try to straighten the window border
and ceiling - a bit more straight lines needed there..

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

elam, yeah I wasn't quite sure what to call it, Defeated Businessmen is more of a working title
You're right about the lighting. It's a remnant of the first version, and I'm aware of that but I'm having severe problems with resolving the image with correct lighting. I'll have to keep trying.

gargoyle, I'm getting visions of a million bodies falling outside the window, but that'd be a bit too grotesque methinks

tek9z, yes the outside will be more detailed. I have something in mind for that, but I'm not quite sure as to whether I'll get it done. Promises to be lots of work, but might be worth it.

apt concept for the way markets going these days i agree with all of the above, but you could emphasize their dejection a little more...like a hand on the temple, head inclined forward...or just shift their gazes "floorward"...just my $.02. i like your color choices and the window in the bg.

i reeaaally like those colors!! maybe you could put some more white in there (like in the collars). and then... how about some really dark blue instead of the black in those shadows? i dunno... i'm not really an expert in coloring, but i guess this might help to make it more interesting.

cptoonz, yeah, I will try out some changes in the poses, though I wanted to make them static because of their disappointment. The facial expressions still need some work.

illuminat, first of all, twenty-three. You're right, the shadows should be complementary, I'll work on that.
And Pi the movie rocked.

Thanks for the comments !

nah... i actually got myself the uk-version at ebay coupla weeks ago. the german version is supposed to be really weak.
it's definitely worth watching. not an entertaining movie, tho - really terrifying.

btw: i heard aronowsky's next movie will feature brad pitt... hm...

Wasn't his next project the new Batman movie ?

Let's see what he does with Brad Pitt. If he does something as good as Fight Club, I'll be satisfied

illuminat, I saw Seven Years in Tibet, that was pretty bad for various reasons....
Yeah Batman is different. I hope they don't commercialize it as much as they used to. That's not something Aronofsky deserves (or needs, for that matter).

BloodStone, yeah, maybe

J. Tsang, thanks

yeah, i saw that one, too... i don't quite remember all of it, tho.

check this out: 'last man'

here's what aronowsky said about it:
quote
Quote:
"It's a post-Matrix, metaphysical Sci-Fi movie, and it's very different to anything you've seen. I call it post-Matrix because Matrix reinvented sci-fi in the same way Star Wars did, or 2001. I'm in a new environment, I'm trying to figure out what type of film would play to an audience now, and I think we came up with something really cool."

there's also some info one that new batman movie.
quote
Quote:
Warner Bros. wants to start the series over again with Darren Aronofsky at the helm and make this series closer to the comic books. As mentioned before: This is a series restart not a prequel.

hm... sounds cool so far. well, i'm still not sure about that batman-thing...

Hmm do you know which one will be released first ?

I also liked the main actor of Pi, Sean Gulette. Check out his site: kgbmedia.com
He'll be in Last Man as well AFAIK.

'last man' is gonna be first.
aronowsky seems to use certain actors over and over again. in 'requiem for a dream' he had gullette as well... as well as many other actors from 'pi'...

illuminat, yeah you're right, but I like Gulette. I think he's a good friend of Aronofsky, so I think that Aronofsky is trying to help Gulette to advance in his acting career.

Iman, thanks for the comment. I love the old hand-painted game covers. Much better than the new "design" type of covers. Thanks for sharing this !

So everyone, what do you think about the direction I'm heading ? Still a lot to do now, but this idea of a full-glass gangway suddenly popped into my mind.

illuminat, just checked the latest cinema program, they'll screen it in Karlsruhe in JUNE.
So I guess I'll finally get to see it.

nice...check the proportions of your businessmen though...Their arms are too big. Don't forget to add reflections on the glass and i don't know if the bottom ought to be glass too...a lot of people get a bit quirky when walikng on glass planes, even if they're not 50m above ground.

hm... i like the first version better. it has more of a gloomy, fusty 80's look... that's what i like about it.
imho the 2nd version is too bright. it lacks some shadows. interesting perspective tho...

Novacaptain, yeah you're right. I scribbled in the legs very fast and never bothered to check them. Reflections are coming up. I know it would be a bit.....uncomfortable for some people to walk there. But hey this is just what popped into my mind.

illuminat, yeah I'm not sure which one I like better. The newer one definitely needs some work, as the connection between the three and the silhouette guy is lost, and that is bad. I think I'll let this image rest for a while and get back to it in a few weeks. I need to do something new.

I much prefer the 1st version. The orange sunset feel and the ruddy lighting contrast nicely with the dark oppressive feeling of the boardroom/hallway. The buildings and whatnot outside are also much more abstract and can be interpreted as a mixtures of tricks of light, reflection, and distortion through the glass.

In the second one the light is overpresent and the gloom is all gone. The perspective suddenly feels wrong and the proportions of the buisness men make them look very very odd. Also there is no sense of the hallway being glass. No reflection or refraction. It is just crystal clear.

Personally I would stick with the very promising first version and not continue with the second. Some minor corrections with the first and you would have a striking dark fun picture.

Just noticed something else that bugged me about the second version. Despite sharp contrast in the lighting of the buisnessmen indicating a very strong lightsource they cast no shadow on the glass and the buildings below them do not have a clear uniform sense of light and shadow (the lightsource is muddled in the buildings).

And the walkway ends in a wall.
