'i think it's time we discussed your philosophy of drug use as relates to artistic endeavour' - subi mono211
this is a question that i have not seen posted on this (or any forum) and i think it is a valid line of discussion as I think you will find that the use of intoxicating substances and art are undeniably connected (not in every case but is defiantly evident in the history of art) the use of alcohol (absynth), lsd, marijuana etc.
i was wondering what other peoples views were?
personally i do blaze out most days and play reasonably heavily with other contraband (but not to the point that i am a vegetable for more than a day (or two))
i feel that i have experiance things that i could not have if i had not dabbled with said substances and thus my art refects this awakening?
(note it is not my aim to encourage the use of drugs. that is a choice peeps have to make on there own time)

I find that drawing straight lines is genneraly easier whilst sober. If I am 'blazed' ? Why paint when you can play Goldeneye.

I haven't tried any real hallucinogens, but I think they could possibly open your perceptions, make you have strange and aesthetically stimulating visions. This would come, however, at the expense of mental and physical well-being. So it's a tough call. I'm personally afraid of trying, say, mushrooms or peyote or acid, because I might like it too much. Moderation is key in all aspects of life, but I'm a little short in the self-control department.
In my experience, smoking weed can disrupt your coordination, but I've had some interesting thoughts and drawn some cool drawings while high. Mostly though, it just makes me a giggly moron. |

heh, giggly moron.... i like doing art when i'm stoned, it actually keeps me glued to the chair and working on the stuff for 2-3 hours w/out a break, then i "wake up" and think that maybe 30 minutes have passed.... doesn't work too good when i'm drunk |

I hate not being in control of myself...to the point of supressing those silly primal urges...so drugs probably wouldn't mix well with my strange, rather fragile psyche.
On another note, my uncle once sold nearly all his belongings for pot and pawned things he borrowed from other people to support this habit. So I'm probably biased against this whole topic anyway. |

it's not that hard to open your own creativity without drugs, is hard to maintain it. drugs can put you into places in the subconscious that you are not trained enough otherwise to experience and even let you remember some of the nuttiness that went on. lots of cosmic adventure without the effort, and so of course there are lots of catches. I don't have a problem with other people who are into occasional recreational drug use, for art or any purpose... but it's not the way I choose to go, and anyone who is into drugs regularly and for a long term - they're just asking to wreck themselves. You're not going to get anything good out of substance abuse. You should also be aware though, that drugs aren't just a bad habit you can indulge in now and then either, you don't know what putting uncontrolled substances into your body is going to do at any time. Forget getting addicted, what about all the people who get killed just from a bad dose? You can get bad anything. Bad e, bad weed, and of course even more potential as you get into harder drugs. I don't know, morally, making drugs create my visions seems like cheater's art to me, and health wise, there's a lot of roulette going on. But like I said, I don't condemn other people, those are just my own fears and beliefs, and I think light, semi-occasional drug use is a relatively harmless thing that many people are into. And yeah, the law cracks down very hard on what is just a cultural thing, but I just thought of it this way: they sure wouldn't want to be libel for all the damage otherwise! |

weed should be legal. It's only slightly more potent than the most potent of cigarettes and it lasts longer. : |

i have never heard of any one dieing from smoking weed (it's not a carsonagen on its own)
and the chance of having a alergic reaction to e is prodicted @ about 120 milion to one (i know this is just statistics and stats is pretend maths)
governments would have you belive that if you take a illigal substance then you will die instntlty but for the large part this is untrue
however ireprable damage only rearing it's ugly head in later life is a concern of mine |

In the sixties the government told the police forces that there is nothing more hostile and violent than a man on Marijuana. Use extreme force when nescesarry.
For god's sake! When you're bakin' you look like this.

true Drbof, no one has died physically but it only takes a few times of token out and it kills personality and creative thought, pretty much turns people into zombies
this may not happen to everybody who does it but it happens to the vast majority...especially if they start doing it when they are like 15 or 16 when the brain is still developing.....so it might as well kill em' |

for the last time. WEED DOES NOT KILL BRAIN CELLS. 'specially if you eat it in space cakes.
But smoking is smoking and smoke is smoke. It's not as bad as cigarettes but it's still smoke.

I smoke weed sometimes... only because it makes me feel better for a little while. As far as my theory on the relationship with drugs and art... I would just like to mention Andy Warhol... I think that in his time, he came up with some really interesting pieces of art. Yay Warhol.
You cannot deny that some people use drugs for enlightenment and creativity and create some fantastic pieces of art. While some don't need or chose to use such substances to feel this way, I don't see anything wrong with it... as long as you're not killing yourself.

I see nothing wrong with someone killing themselves (over time, or whatever, not in a suicide way),knowingly or not, as long as they are not killing others.

The best way to describe an acid trip is "tinny". It's like reality was being pushed through one of those old 30s style radios. That and everything boils and looks slick.

I`m a pill popper myself.
Zoloft,Ativan,Xanax,Klonopin, whatever...
But I take them cause I`m a little funny in the lid,not for pleasure.
They help my mind focus on a subject, rather then thrash around thinking of everything.

to Impaler:
yeah, marijuana can give you lung cancer, but i smoke moderate amounts of it like once or twice a week, while other people smoke a pack of cigarettes per day.... so i'm not too scared of dying from lung cancer....
and too much alc fucks up your liver... anything you wonna do is cool with me, just in moderation |

Darklighter: I wholeheartedly agree, and then some.
If you wanna screw yourself 3 times over, up the arse, sideways, then go for it. It's your fault for doing it. There's been enough anti-drug commercials/programs/laws over the years that one should know that drugs are bad. If you o.d. on crank, then it's not my fault.
Therefore, we should legalize ALL drugs. All the dumb smackheads will die, leaving the stronger ones behind. We'll of course still have to have our anti-drug commercials, and our clinics and our warning labels, but it won't be our fault if you die.

Drugz are bad, that's what my parents told me... But seriously though I've seen alot off people totally fuck themselves up, and one committed suicide, so try to stay away from chemical substances, except beer and don't drink too much of that either. |
