it's not very good. and not finished either (not sure how best to detail it. how to go about cross hatching on a curved surface without the straight lines ruining the illusion of curve on the neck.) need to detail more, clean up the more wavering lines, and add some cross-hatched mid tones.
P.S. I know anatomy is off- head shape is off and neck is too long, this was not intended but I used no references and was out of practice.
I could use advice on how to go about detailing, and how to add a background without it muddling the edge of the figure too much. |

I can't really say a whole lot about that, but I remembered drawing a black and white dick tracey picture in art class and thought this one [found online] might give you an idea for the shading...
I think you should define one light source and then work with it.
Right now there's one light ontop of him ( or at least there's a bright spot on his hat) so his face would be all black...
Hmmm, I'd try a light source in front of him, so the shadows would be in the right part of the picture...
