This is my first post here and I am definately looking for C&C. Saddly I probably won't be able to impliment any changes right away as this is a gift to my fiancee and her birthday is tomarrow. I do have to colour it however so when I get to that point I will definately want to fix any errors. Hope ya'll like it and please have a look at the rest of my stuff at: www.graphicdesignershere.com/mike.html and let me know what ay think of the rest of teh site also.
Later,
ShadowBlade

Welcome abord. Jus finished looking at your stuff. I know it is hard just getting here and then someone giving feedback which sound negative. Here goes anyways.
-Love the Carosel image fanatstically done.
-Your traditional work is average, you have a pretty good handle on things. Hard work will develop those.
-You have a flare for poses, a great quality. Which for alot of people is a road bump (even myself battle with it)
- I see you are influenced by Comic Art. Who isn't. Thre are a number of understanding anatomy issues that need work. as well as, proportions.
-I know that a computer can make painting easier, however when be just begining on the computer we have a tendency to cheat. By that I mean that we use very flat colours, gradiants and the dreaded black lines.
-I would suggest going to the local craft store and picking up a basic acrylic set and mix paint to find out what they do. And then try using blocks of colour to paint this portait.
-At the computer decide if you want to just colour or if you want to paint the portrait. And work from there.
-As for where to go with the line drawing, use photoshop to create another under the line drawing and paste the photo there, then on the line drawing lower the opasity and you will see how accurate you are. Invaluble really.
Lastly Draw what you see not what you think you can see.

Many thanks,
You were incredibly kind. I know most of my failings, and work on them daily, but it is always great to have an outside perspective. Which you "sandwiched" perfectly. That is a term my fiancee uses to describe your type of crits, positive, negative, positive, etc, etc.
As to the painting, it sounds horible to say, but... Never gonna happen. Guess I was never taught correctly, but I have a passionate hate for the brush. I love its results, but I have no desire to pick it up for my self. I have failed, in the burning reackage of a drunken pilot kind of failed, on almost every occasion and the few that remain were not much better than that. Personally I like my "cheating computer ways". I am by no means arguing with you. I am more than positive it would help me, but I just cannot bring myself past the frustration. One of my few failings I guess. Just saw your stuff too. Excelent work. Nice progression. Only one real big crit: Keep all work on the net small enought to be viewed with-out scrolling. There are exception of course, but that is just a personal pet peave of mine.
Personally I have been at this since I was 12 and am now 22 and this is as far as I have come. It takes alot of work for those of us who did not come out of the womb with a pencil in our hands. Our love for the art is what keeps us going.
Anyone else wanna chime in? |

My suggestion to paint was just a way for you to liberate yourself. My philosophy is to play. I didn't care if the painting becomes a mutant, you always learn from your mistakes. Painting on the computer uses the wrist and, if you are rich and can afford a large tablet, the elbow. Painting traditionaly uses both plus the rotator cup in the sholder. Could help you.
I agree with scrolling it is annoying, but hey so is flipping the page. Sometimes to see the bigger picture we have to do the nasty.
Wow you started at 12, I started doodling at 15. I am fortuante that I had some art training while taking an Education Degree (Art Major). I just want to pass that information on to whom ever wants it. We all have to work hard at this, otherwise everyone would be able to do it.
JA
ps thanks for the comments

That is a horrible way to crit peoples work... I is shame...
well my crit... I am new to these fourms also
I like the style in fact it is different shows feelings but if you compare the real photo with the drawing they look alike... in the pose and feeling of the drawing... I say it is good. I would like to see some color on it though
the male neck seems to strong though might want to make the neck smaller or less strong looking. |

Thank's guys.
As for style, real or comic? I guess comic, but really it is almost cartoony also, it is suposed to be a "characature" of sorts. Hence the some what exagerated freatures, but in the same breath that is also my general style.
About the neck. Yeah I definately made it stronger than my picture. There are two reasons for this. 1) It looked to flat compared to the detail I out in the rest of the pic, and 2) it is a characature so I wanted to feed my own ego a a little. Does it look bad? It can be altered.
Colour is coming. Maybe not for a week or 2 though as I am in the process of moving.
Thanks again to almost every one, you nkow who I am excluding.
Anyone eles?

Hmmm member number 16 ? Explains the naphtaline smell then
ShadowBlade, keep practicing and notice the volume of things. Even cartoons have a construction behind them.
Also... don't get angry or anything but have you noticed no one uses images in their signatures ?.... ('cept perhaps one exception) |

Oh dear, i've been drawing ever since i could hold any kind of mark-making object (i did some truely genius creations on the bathroom wall....i remember this masterpiece i did: a shark in ultra-marine blue crayon on crispy white house paint).
My father was a commercial artist and had a studio at home, every since i was little he'd critique my work - so i knew a lot about shadow and light etc at a young age. But in highschool everyone tended to catch up and i wasn't really the best anymore :/
Anyway, my point is - even though i've been artistic all my life, i'm still no where near as good as most of the people in here!
Seriously, the work in here just blows me away.
I think that i *used* to be ahead of everybody (you know, in primary school!!!! haha), but i feel like the world of art has suddenly catapulted right past me. I guess i'm a bit slack at keeping up to date with this fast moving world.
ramble ramble.... ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

oo and i should comment on the work...
i like it, though it's hard to really know because it's just line art...i think that once it has been rendered it will come to life (hopefully!)
There's something about the face of the figure on the right, to me it doesn't really capture the personality in the photo. Maybe because you're drawing yourself you influence the character a lot more, ie your mind has ideas how it SHOULD be...etc (though that's probably better advice for life drawing).
I was also thinking that maybe the material has a bit too much detail? The girl's sleeve on the left (her right) looks baggy and a bit stretched out of shape. I mean, there's nothing really wrong with it, but i thought that if it was simplified a bit more it might look better - and same for the rest of the clothing. It's just that as a line art drawing, the detail in the clothes (for me) distracts the eye away from the faces - which i think should be the focal point.
Anyway, i definately think you should render it and see where that takes you. Shadow, lighting and colour could really transorm this piece and give it so much more life.
good luck! And i admire you for your courage. I haven't posted any of my work yet...*eeeeeeep* |
