Last I looked I kicked ass in Deluxe Paint IV. Then I spent 6-7 misguided years in a suit trying forget what I loved to do. So much has happened since then?! Anyway I trying to get back to where I should have been in Painter & Photoshop. I purchased a Wacom tablet, several Photoshop books + a Painter book, but I still have such a long journey ahead of me, when I see what A R T I S T S like Craig Mullins and other people on these pages can do.
Anyway, I will have to learn while doing. I scanned a quick crayon sketch, and I am determined to turn it into a great CG image. I started doodling at the eye (wonderful little restricted area), but the rest is so big (nothing like good old 64 colour low-res on the Amiga!), that it kind of overwhelms me. Any advice on where to go from here to quickly cover some ground and win a few fast morale points?
Dammit. At this point I realise that the image has to be on a webpage in order for it to be shown here in the post. Well, I will be most happy to forward the image to anybody reaching me at . However I do suspect that is a bit much to ask, in order to help a loser like me. |

Yes... you are asking a bit much and my guess is everyone is to busy to rendesvouz with you via email. Why don't you try uploading it to a web server? |

Here we go...
I sized it a lil bit down...hope you don't mind.
It's still pretty big, but at least the file isn't as big anymore...
By the way... I've been to Denmark on vacation. Maybe you know the island Texel?
Nice place...

bull paint over in 16 steps (GIF)
ok, here's the deal...paint overs are just suggestions, educational material or ways to carry across a message that couldn't be expressed in words. I'm not telling you that the way i've done it is *right* or that this is what you're aiming for. I'm just saying (with this 490k gif file) the following:
I sugesst starting by blocking in the main shapes and values and working towards the detail in the end, otherwise you may get carried away for hours doing things that aren't reallly important. and lose track of the whole.
Use reference too...it helps a lot - I didn't use any and that can be one of the reasons why i painted a strange-looking skin fold across it's body that probably doesn't exist on real cows and bulls. The musculature is totally bogus and the tail, as was pointed out to me, looks like plastic. This is, of course, not what a "finished" painting would look like...this is something like the 1st hour of getting the basics down before you go into greater detail.
These are just some of the reference photos you can find just by typing "bull" in www.google.com's image search.
That last one shows how the musculature looks in reality. |

Your crayon sketch reminds me of Pablo Picasso. At one point in his life (after he had seen one or two bullfights) he became completely obsessed with bulls, and produced lord knows how many artworks centralized around them...
I've recently gone to the Picasso museum in Paris, so I just remember seeing all of his bull pictures there. He developed quite a few obsessions in his life...
Er, so anyway, I like it. ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Thank you so much guys! For putting up my drawing, and especially for the 9-step paint over, it will be so usefull! And for you Ghandaia, Picasso is not one of my personal favourites, although there is no question about his genius, and thus I am honoured to be mentioned in the same sentence as him!
Thanks
