Yep, adding more to the piled up stack of unfinished work(do digital files "pile up"?)
I've been drawing/painting my butt off, having been mysteriously inspired for the last few months. I really should be finishing all the WIP I already have on my plate, but new ideas keep popping up. Grrr.... As some of you might recall, I already have the Black Wolf Ronin, the Seaside Angel, the Cityscape, and several others that needs to get finished up. It's a miracle I even finished Snow and Melancholic Princess. . ..
Anyway, here are 3 most recent ones I'm working on.
This should also include the back view and an isometric view. I debated whether or not to do this particular concept piece in this style, since it's so smoothly rendered, I might as well have done it in 3D instead? What are your thoughts on this? I originally wanted to go for a more painterly look, which would be interesting on mechanical stuff, but the more I paint, the more it just seemed to make more sense to render it smoothly.
I havn't done any classic "group shot" type of fantasy work since Enchatned 4 years ago. I have to say, it feels awesome to go back to one's roots(yep, grew up reading Fighting Fantasy books. ). I'm not sure if the layout/composition is working. I mean, it's a fairly static shot, so dynamic composition will probably be awkward. I kinda wanted a straight on look, almost like they are posing for a group portrait. Suggestions?
When the Princess needs to kick ass, she will. The background will probably be sky with clouds. Any ideas?

Love the group shot. Guess it hits back on my roots too.. nothing is ever quite as cool as a group of adventurers hanging out. |

Cool stuff!
I like the group shot, The girl with seven-foot long scythe kicks ass. I've tried a lot group shots in the past, it's hard to make them look as they belong together. Mebbe slight personal interaction could help. I'd like to see this one coloured.
The princess' clothes is kinda um.. flimsy? not that I'm complaining.
But I remember a old obscure game whose heroine's costume design I absolutely digs. couldn't find any screenshot except this. http://www.gamedong.co.kr/gamedb/saint_eyes/saint_eyes.html
About background.. mebbe it's better to find a historical era for reference, her feature might fit Greek/Persian. Much easier if you have a definitve idea and rich source of reference photos to drew from. |

Hunago--Hehe, there's a reason why the Princess is scantily clad. That pic takes place right after the folowing event in the story:
The Princess had snuck into her father's(the king)"pleasure palace" to consult with his concubines about ways to please a man. You see, the Princess is in love with a peasant young man who she met by accident(she likes to disguise herself as a peasant and go wandering around the kingdom--behind her father's back, of course).
She wanted to give him a "surprise present," and asked him to meet her at a well-known Inn that sometimes featured exotic dancers from foreign lands. Well, the peasant boy was both thrilled and embarrassed when he saw the spectacular performance that night--even though he had no idea it was her. Imagine his surprise when she took off the veil and winked at him.
Then, the assassins who had been tracking the Princess attacked the Inn, trying to capture her.
So, that's why she is in that outfit, weilding a sword.
Oh, and the story is not historical. It's totally fictional in the way that Final Fantasy games have totally original settings.
For the group shot, I originally had them interacting, but then it seemed they were in their own little cliques. It also gave the impression that there were couples in the group(I didn't want to give that impression). So, I decided to take the group portrait approach. |

Pretty cool roughs.
But what really stood out was the group picture. But not the entire picture itself! Only the women 2nd from the left(left to right). Something about her presence, stance, or general mood is very stand outish from this picture. In a way it reminds me of your "sad princess" painting. |

Hiya luna.. nice roughs.. from a quick glance.. the last image of the chick with the sword.. i think her arms are too short.. kinda disproportionate from the rest of her.
Just my 2 cents.. and.. Oi! been following your work.. and it's impressive.. Peace out.

Hi Lunatique.
The last girl could have some problems with her neck area. It seems like she has none, hehe. Also, her arms are quite short, I think.
The middle one in coming along nicely, and the top one is pretty tight!

You guys are right. The Princess's arms and neck might be a bit short. I'll see to it.
EviLToYLeT-- Then you havn't seen this one then:
It's an old piece for enchanted from about 5 years ago. It was done with mixed mediums(the "everything-but-the-kitchen-sink" approach to painting). If I were to redo this piece now, I would make it totally different.
The big dude looks like me? Hahaha. Man, if I could only look as "I can kick your ass" cool as him. . ..
The line from bicept to forearm? I'm not sure what you mean, but then again, that sketch is a rough doodle with nothing finalized. Everything could change as I do the clean drawing before I start painting. |
