I have been painting this almost all night. Wanted to get some opinions. First the things im still working on - the grass, the color range of the statue and making the statue look more like stone.

Here's some questions - I added the clouds because i felt the sky was too plain.. but maybe a plain sky would be better? what do you guys think? (here's a link to an older version with no clouds http://www.aradani.com/masked.jpg ) And what would be the best way to make the statue feel more rock-like? Maybe make the different colored areas more chunky? Well anyways, any help or crits are welcome..

Update.

Fixed the clouds, added some mass to the statue. Only thing left is the grass. Unless anyone has an opinion...

Sort of cool concept... its reminds me of a book I read a while ago in feel.

My only comment is on the composition... I'm guessing that you're going for a sort of isolated feeling...

Maybe try a second version where you have more background to emphasis the emptiness, and a slightly different perspective on the statue to give it some interest and make it seem not so flat.

On this one i really want it straight on with the mask as thats the main focal point.. but you guys are right, the horizon line is too low. I still have to finish up the grass so I think ill add some in the background making the horizon seem higher.

Also what I might do is make a small model of this guy in clay and see what it looks like in the bright sun.. i need to give him some more mass but its hard without making deep shadows.

thanks for the crits

I agree with eyre. What stands out to me is the perspective seems to be off. Your horizon line is at the top of the grass. But your statue is appearing flat because it looks like the viewers eye is level with the statue. Maybe you could try more of an upward perspective if you want the background to be empty. Or I would add some hills in the background to raise the viewers eye lvl into the pic. I will try to do a paintover if you don't mind.

Ok, I hope this img helps. I raised the horizon line and added a vanishing point off the top of the page. This gives some perspective to your statue and adds some visual interest to the img.

this is just my opinion so take it or leave it, I just hope you don't mind the paintover
