This is for a 3D model I'm working on. I'm using this as the template to model from, and I have 2 versions that are slightly different. Tell me which one you prefer and why.
The frontal template is the Melancholic Princess I painted a couple of weeks ago.
I like the 2nd one the most, but I think the mouth and chin area is a bit long(vetically). I like the first one too, but I think the nose might be a bit long(vertically).
I can't exactly combine the two since only the first one is proportioned to the measurements of the frontal template. If I stick to the 2nd one, the frontal template becomes obsolete. I tried to alter the frontal template to fit the 2nd profile, but that just made my Melancholic Princess look like an ugly dog. . ..
Anyway. Let me know which you prefer and why. |

i like the first one best, i think its because of the nicer shape in the forehead and the mouth and chin look more compact and feminine. |

I like the second one better - it's more girlish and not that womanish (I'd guess you'd want your princess to be more like a girl than a grown woman - like she's in your previous pic). Somehow also the first one has her eye a bit too high and the chin is too short in comparison.

Edit: just forgot to say you've done a great job here!

I prefer the second, though I had to scroll up and down a lot to determine the diferences between the two.

Second one. first one face is too long. You need to fix up the head shape (top part) on the second one though. |

I like the second one better, I like how the forehead is smaller and the chin is farther out. It makes her look younger. neway whatevs. It's actually kinda hard to tell whats different between the two because they are not side by side. |

Actually, it's better that they are not side by side. This way, you can get a "feel" for the personality of the faces individually, instead of comparing them mathematically.
Keep them coming. I'm very interested in how different people perceive human features. It'll impact my work a lot in the future. I guess this is research and development Luna style? |

Both are gorgeous... but I think I like the first one better.
Not because of the anatomy of the face nor the features, as much as for the emotion I think she displays.
She does look very melancholy. Something sad and almost frightened in her eyes. The other face is great, too, but it looks by far more neutral.
Just my silly thoughts though =) |

I like the first one. The nose to upper lip transition just seems a little more natural. |

I like the first, she looks more royal with her nose/higher cheekbone. the second has a younger look, I think the difference mainly stems from the position of her eye.
In a recent project, I worked on creating profile and 3/4 view from existing frontal sketch. Aside from making the anatomy consistent, it's almost impossible to get these views to match the original personality and feel. The hair is even harder.
Access to a real model would certainly help, I just don't seem to have that inner eye in 3 dimensions. |

The first one looks alot better to me. Aside from the fact that the first one actually follows the standard artist proportions for the human face, it does appear to be more feminine. But from reading the previous replies... I can see that everyone percieves things differently. |

A very pretty face. But you are spot on with your own comments, Lunatique, the top one's nose is too long, and the bottom one's chin is too long. If those were made shorter they would both be perfect, the only really noticeable difference that the lower one's jaw is pushed slightly farther forward, which makes her look stronger.
But also remember that we aren't really evolved to look at - or to communicate with - profiles... we're much better at judging frontal views or 3/4 views of the human face. What I mean is, the 3/4 view is much more important to get right than the profile. I've noticed in my modeling, I can have a nice cute profile while the 3/4 still looks like sh1t. So maybe now that you have an ok profile, focus on the front and 3/4. |

they are both really cool, and there are subtle differences...I like them both, and that's worth what you paid for it I have to concur with Mr. Stahlberg, the 3/4 view is the most engaging, and most difficult...as I can attest as I struggle with it even now. good work, regardless.

Hey, thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Very helpful in allowing me to see how the features affect people's individual emotional response.
I'm still trying to familiarize myself with Maya 4's tools. I've gotten most of the polygon tools down, and now I'm tackling the nurbs tools. |
