Sunny day = hard shadows. Saturated colours and highlights. Can't do an overpaint, haven't got a tablet.
Example:
Sorry for being brief. Gotta go get sleep.
Cheers,
jome. |

Maybe this will help. I britened the highlits, darkened some shadows, and warmed up the flesh tones to create a more sunny atmosphere. hope it helps out.

Hi there,
I did a very quick repaint of this (mainly as practice for myself ), but it sucks and Hunter_Rose0 already did this excellent paintover, so I'll confine to text here...
As was already said, if you want the scene to be sun-lit, use higher contrast between light and shadow. The sun is a direct light source. Speaking of direct light, I think it would be more convincing for a sun-lit scene if you removed the clouds.
As for the flatness, I think depth will come with better defined light&shadow (as in Hunter's picture). |

Wow! thank you hunter! I'd never expected anyone to comeout with an excellent paintover like that! not to say that the others are not as good....i just thought of seeing simple shades of light and shadow... but you really really beautified it....i can never attempt that level of imagination...
How did you comeup with the lighting and how long did you took? Seems like ive got a long way to go...
And thanks Jome and Agrajag, I will try hard for my next piece... i think its still to early for me to fully imagine my works....guess i still need reference...
Here's my attempt at reworking my piece, gah, I need a long way to go..
thank you for your tutelage... im very honored that you guys took the time to reply and actually did a paintover... thanks |

OK, maybe I went a little far with the hair. The intention was to place some of the essential facial planes in order to help with the lighting. Essentially, this is your painting. Another helpful hint is use of side or reflective light… For example, under the chin and the blue highlight on the side of the face.
ANYWAY! Hope that this helps a little.

whoa thanks dual....the plane conversion really helps a lot!...
but the problem with me is I just can't seem to nail the kick light just right... it seems like everytime i add a secondary light source it just comes across as too conspicous (hope thats the spelling)... |

Here's quick overpaint, how I see it:
side of shadows should be darker tho.

thanks tepox!thats what i initially wanted to create! So, for a sunlit atmosphere I need bright hilights and warmer midtones plus harder shadows... okay, i got it.... thanks!
anyway, heres another piece which im working on... trying my hand on fully imagined pieces again...i was thinking more of a dark atmosphere this time...
yeah.. the color version is a bit rough right now...but now iwant to nail the mood just right, before i start painting on the pic (i realize that what is most noticably absent from my works is mood)
Any suggestion, paintovers and crits is VERY much appreciated....thank you, you guys are my newest tutors..

Youve created so much life and energy in the piece!...I really love this! Its a great honor to have you repaint one of my pieces.
Thank you!
Im gonna save this one up and use this as reference, as I've done with the other overpaints, of course!

Steven,
Your overpaint is absolutely amazing to me (taking nothing away from the others), can you tell me what "tools" that you use to get that great hand painted look? I am curious because I have recently purchased Painter and am trying to get a handle on some of the brushes it can generate. I am taking a guess that you are using Painter as well, although of course I could be way off, anyway,
Thanks,
-Rich |

Thanks landmaster and Judex!
Judex, that's Photoshop, I think the method is really simple and similar to what a lot of other people do - a hard-edged round paintbrush at 100% opacity, with pressure-sensitivity affecting the opacity. Then a lot of Alt+click to change colors often, I also change the size of the brush a lot but only between 3 or 4 different sizes mostly.
(I also use the Smudge tool here and there.) |

i say ditch the wings in the pic w/ the guy. if you do this one right it could have so much mood. the line drawing comes across very moody to me. maybe even have some stuff laying beside him that reinforce this mood, whether it be boredom or apathy or whatever. it would also be tight if he was holding something or fiddling with something. just throwin out all kinds of ideas ;} |

Steven,
Again,you have truly inspired me,
absolutely beautiful...
I love the ambience and lighting, I also love how you put the dust/fog up front to and the back to give it a very ancient feeling, you also improved on the figure a LOT! Thank you! I know which direction to go now... it an honour again for you to paint another one of my sketches..
Ill post my version up soon!
RATBAT:I used photoshop 6.0, airbrush with pressures varying from 5-15 and a spacing of 30.. Smudge tool is also used...
Louis: Thanks for the crits, I will add something to the composition to give it a better feel... however I feel that I have to keep the wings since it is a sketch of a malakhi(angel) and this is sort of like a piece to be included in my graphic novel, Walk of Regret....I will improve on it, thanks!

wild! maybe the the reflected light (on the chair) could be more orange? I'm asking because I'm not really sure.
The facial expression seems to convey "intense abdominal pain" the clutching on to the chair emphasise this IMHO

Awesome!
Steven if you could see the animated emoticon above, thats how I look like when I saw the newest one!
Can I ask a few things,
Do you use reference for the figure and lighting?
Do you have a studio to experiment on lightsources and all?
Will I ever be able to do that?
and will you ever cease to amaze me? |

Novacaptain, you mean the light bounced back from his shoulders onto the backrest of the throne, yes you're right - I'll add some.
Abdominal pain - I agree. Part of it is because the head seems to be too far down to be comfortable, and the stomach is tensed as in a spasm. A cool idea would be to add a spear through his middle, and blood pooling on the floor...
jr and landmaster, thanks. landmaster, I didn't use any reference, you can tell because the lighting isn't physically correct yet - some parts of him that are in shadow should be lit, and vice versa. No studio. Yes, I think you can get the lighting right... you just have to visualize the rays of light emanating from the light-source, and which parts of a surface they reach. Once you've decided on your lighting, and as long as you know the shape of the surface in question, it becomes a simple problem of geometry. Using some sort of 3d software seems to help too, I think it's helped me at least. |

this is in reply to nova. why an orange light? that would alter the mood of it completely and wouldn't make any sense.
steve, that's an awesome looking stomach. the angel looks tired. maybe he could have flown commerical next time? |

Sha-ka-ka.
Landmaster, you have been very fortunate in having some great help from the well to do's here. Now what have you learned. Do a repaint of yours and show us. I just say this because, I myself am guilty of asking for help and not following up on that piece. I like the style of your first one, the ideas that I might suggest are
changing some of the saturation of the colours.
Work with lines and edges and create a gradual clarity from the back to front. Making the foreground sharp.
