Hi all..

I have a tough assignment; my sister wants a portrait of her daughter Natascha.. I rarely do portraits but my sister asked and what can you do!? The reference picture shows the baby with open eyes and smiling, but my sister wanted a picture with closed eyes and without the smile.. I'd like some c&c - does the sketch resemble the reference in your opinion?

The pencil sketch makes the baby look like a characature of some dead chinese ruler. Looks like you altered some of the features (lips, ears, cheek shading) to look more adult and made the top of the head too flat.

The way the cheek is shaded it makes it look like the baby has a 5 o clock shadow. . .

When working with people, you should definitly use softer shades, especially with children. You're well on your way, I think you just need a little blending,

I think what bothers me about it is the cheeks. If she's not smiling, her eyes wouldn't be scrunched up, and her cheeks wouldn't be so rounded and prominent, especially so close to the eye. Her face would be a bit thinner, and the lines to designate the roundess of her cheeks wouldn't be so prominent and would be down a bit lower.. Other than that, I think it' really nice.

Why not take a better reference pic?

Thx for the c&c - Maybe a better ref picture is a good idea.. and the more subtle shades also sounds like a good idea. Overall it definately needs more work. I don't know why she wants a picture without a smile - but it's her call, and a good excersise for me to do what the "customer" want!
