here's something I've been working at. suggestions, critique, comments, overpaints or anything are welcome! there's going to be a few other running men in the background but right at the moment I have no idea how I'll choose to render them there. the debris on the foreground was killing me but now it's starting to look more like debris. I want to make him look like he's paddling his way through the branches and stuff. dead people, perhaps should I make him look dirtier? tried to do it but it looked horrible...
well, tell me what you think!

Hi Palladia!
I have tried to show you my initial thoughts regarding your piece.
The spear is very important, and how you place that in the frame is going to have great impact (ofcourse you know this), so I've changed that a little to show you what I mean.
Also I think some variation in the sky could benefil the "story". I'm having him charge into the unknown, dark and gloomy territory, leaving the glorius victory behind.....or something, hehe.
EDIT: Ok, highlight HELL!! Sorry 'bout that.

OK - anatomy - not that i'm an expert but his lower back seems to bulge (our left - just above his forearm) - i'd have it curving in toward his lower ribs - i could be very wrong here tho'!
I like Sukhoi's smoky sky as well as the hilite/shadow job - it gives the appearance of sooty yet sweaty -
but as far as the spear goes - if he's running forward through brush/debris - it should be as the original pose, tho' perhaps angled toward us a little (as Sukhoi's is) -
else he'll snag it on something - other than that - perhaps some sort of leather wrapping/thongs/bindings somewhere on his arm(s)?
Should be good when it's done
[edit] grammar (as usual)

Yeah Satan, you're right about the spear problem.
One wouldn't run holding the spear like that.
But I just tried to make the picture more dynamic and complete in some way, you know?!

Yeah - i realise - i think if it were angled with the spearhead toward us - it might give some of the added depth and dynamic quality, without losing (perhaps anal?) credability.

Yeah, you're absolutely right, I see that now.
It's quite funny that we're discussing Palladias' picure whithout him even being here. He's propably doodling ahead somewhere in the quikie thread, haha!

had to register a new username as I lost my previous password... and now I think this new name sucks. damn.
but go ahead and discuss, there were some good pointers. that extra smoke was a good idea, thanks. there will be also a shield and a helmet in the final picture. I think I should simplify the pic a lot and work from thereon...
I'd post the updated version but for some reason the server I use is offline.
new ideas, overpaints and comments are still welcome!

Poser can be a great referance tool for illustartions. I use it to help with lighting and preportion, but it can too easily become a crutch. If you use a 3d programme as reference try to also find a live refrence as well (or at least a photograph). because the real human body is mutch softer and flexible than it's 3d counterpart. Try to bring out the musculature more. Also think about the effects of bending and gravity on a real flesh body also. I did a quick paintover here, I hope it may help Drag this link to the adress bar to see the image |

here's the updated version. note: it's still sketchy, I've used only a total sum of 1,5 hours on it. so there's not much detail.
hunter_rose, I don't believe in using those poser models as a paintover background. some people do it and it's always obvious when you see the pic. plus you don't learn so much that way. but you made a good point about the muscles.
haven't used any reference for the pic so far... any idea for what to draw instead of the shield? I don't want to paint over the background that much he's going to have a helmet though.
comments!

you better check the lighting on that guy, it seems a bit too strong. |

perhaps a roll of parchment?
- maybe he's a messenger?
(only an idea - might not suit it) |

His pose seems very tight to me, like he's all tension, waiting to be blown up (which makes it hard to run). There is something about Sukhoi's paint-over that loosens him up a bit, but I can't put my finger on it.
The rendering is looking very good, though. |

We love Palladia!!
He could be the marathon messenger who brought the message af marvellous triumph over a distance of (a marathon), just to fall dead to the ground.
Crits:
-The spear is still a little weird, I think...
-it looks like he's standing still, maybe give him some waving clothing or have his leather-waist-thingy float in the air (from the movement)?
-He's a spearman, so he can't really hold a chopped off head in his hand....
-good stuff!!!

Just a thought on his left hand. What about opening it for balance (his balance that is - hes got the spearhand quite tight to the torso). That would probably add some movement as well as remove the "twin"-feeling. No? |
