just playing around after finding the 2nd edition monster manual II. This is just a concpt, getting ideas n stuff. I dont like the position of the critter, and the background isnt what i hoped it to be.
whats a good way to show deep underwater movement?

Hi,
I got some good advice from some experts a while back. All the light should be diffused as if you are looking through a fog. there shouldnt really be any extreme highlights as the light gets really diffused on the way down through the water.
A reeeeeeeeally quick overpaint, to get the idea of image depth. I did one a while back that might be able to help
Theres also a thread going on about matte paintings if you look through, and they are using and underwater scene. There are some very good tips in there, so have a root around the forum and youll find some useful info... hope this helps! |

I like the pic. It's good to know that I'm not the only one who flips through the old D&D books when I run short of ideas.
The only suggestion I would have is to tone everything towards blue. As you go deeper, all the colors except blue get filtered out, as I understand it.
I've only done one underwater scene in recent memory, and everything just looked wrong somehow until I dropped a bluish color layer over the whole thing.
Hope that helps. For the record, my favorite was the old Fiend Folio. |

i really didnt like how i positioned the first aboleth, so I tried again. this time, i think i captured a better sense of movement with it. I also really like the background for this one.
i hope i got the diffused underwater look right. c&c welcome.
what happend to that great underwater thread from awhile ago? |

A lot better! couple of things... like the new angle, a lot more interesting. The thing looks as though its about to swim into the floor, so maybe lower the floor or make it a cliff or something. The lighting is getting better, but everything is still too sharp, remember that the edges wouldnt be as defined further away, try getting an airbrush and brushing a layer of dark blue over most of the picture and play around with it until it looks a bit murkier. Getting there though!! The background is a hell of a lot better, more dynamic! |
