I know the answer is probably going to be 'there is no right and wrong' but none the less,
This is my first serious attempt at painting digitally (with a mouse 'cos I aint got no tablet) and want to know if I am on the right track. Any suggestions or tips anyone can give me on digital painting would also be greatly appreciated

yeah, its a good start....but get yourself a tablet, even if its a cheap one but a investment in a quality Wacom should be made if at all possible, the rewards will far outweigh the costs. Digital painting is just like real painting there is no real right way isn't it great. Try to sharpen up the forms of the face. Use the planes which you did pretty well, just do it with a sharp edge brush in when you start the painting |

Not that there is probably alot of interest in this thread but I thought I would put up another pic a bit further along, any advice from you guys would be appreciated as I don't have much experience in painting either traditionally or digitally!

It's lookin real good (and I have absolutely no idea how people can draw with a mouse).
Anyway, there's one thing that bothers me: his eyes. One of them is placed slightly off - I think it's HIS right eye.. it should be closer to his nose (and a bit higher), I believe. Anyone else have input?
Otherwise, it's really cool.

well, thanks for the feedback but you're comment brings one other important flaw to my attention, HE is supposed to be a SHE! lol
I guess I need to do some more work to the facial features to fox this, any suggestions as how to make her appear more feminine (she is supposed to be a bit butch, but still obviously a female). Is it mainly the shape of her head and the short hair? |

Looks nice so far. I think part of the femimine/masculine problem is that it looks like she only has one breast, and it could pass for a fold of cloth. Make the cloak or whatever that is wrapping over conform to the shape of the breast underneath, particularly on *her* left side. Also, her neck is kind of thick for a woman. Really nice job for using a mouse. =D
EDIT:
I was looking at it again and I think her head and neck are a bit off-center on her shoulders. I think her neck comes out closer to her left shoulder. =)

I think another problem with the gender problem is that her jawline is to well defined and square. |

ok, I took all the comments into consideration and think I am almost there (just the weapons to go) I spent ages on the face, re-defining its shape and trying to make the lips more pronounced, even though it probably doesn't look like it and also tried to make the cape flow around the shape of the breasts.
Thanks for all the advice I have gotten so far, and sorry to keep dragging this thread up again and again, but I like to get as much feedback as possible, especially when working in a medium, I am not overly familiar with

looks good, especialy considering you used a MOUSE!!!
but I would say 2 things:
head and shoulders are too high up.here's a hack to show what I mean:
her shoulders are too broad for a woman. |

Hey BASTION , see you found a better site for your works . Your pic is really looking good now . A couple of things I think you need to do is add an upper lip ,decrese
saturation and add some texture using custom brushes . I really like your style ! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

thanks for that Golderak, I see what you mean. Instead of trying to move her breasts up, I moved everything above down a bit, it required re-drawing a few little bits but I think I achieved the result.
Is this better?

You're doing great.
The lips could also be refined... I know the top lip is supposed to be dark blue, but I think it kind of gets lost in her big blue face. Maybe play around with the colors or out-line it...
Keep us posted. ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |
