I did this for the drawing class at Shane's Drawing Board. I plan on finishing it in full color and with a lot more detail. This is a really rough draft, so most of it might be very different when finished. But, C&C based on its current state is welcomed.

This is a wonderful image, Luni! I particularly like the willowy feel to the figure. The only couple things I could see: her palms look too long (it might even accentuate the graceful feel if her palm was turned ever so slightly toward her face and her fingers were curved), also I think the shadows should be deepened (especially at the wing base) to increase the feel of the setting sun light quality (and perhaps some highlights on her eyes for the secondary source).
Top notch! |

it looks amazing! but it looks kind of like her buts a square, you might want to strip her down...I mean add more shadowing near the thing draped across her butt. |

Looks really good! I like the overall feel of the pic, the very moody greyish tone works really well with this character and the intimidated look on her face!!!
I only have one comment... well actually two that is! First: I think the background could take a bit more bluring effect!! I think the brushstrockes on the wooden fence and the dark spots of the leaves are too strong! They take away attention from the character which is obviously the main focus point in the pic! A bit of work on that would do the pic immensely good! ...and Second: I dont think I undestand the light strip running down the Angels left side! The strong light of the sun setting would throw this part into deep shadow, which I also think would help to add alot to the tension of the drawing (I know you had to cast some light from this side, to illuminate her face, but its too much now, not enough contrast)!!!
Very small changes could make this drawing look absolutely stunning!!!

Here's the next step. I played around with some color schemes and decided on the current one. I just started rendering the background, and so far only the sky is really done. The rest is just blocked in with a color layer to determine the colors.
I'll post each of the step, and when it's completely finished, this thread will be a tutorial in itself.

Looks great! One thing though, I think that the secondary light creating hilights on her body should light up her right wing a little.
Good stuff. |

DarkStalker1- Actually, the way I'm doing this one is VERY different from how I usually work. I never do something in B/W first and then color it. I think I decided to do it this way because I've colored a couple of Stahlberg's B/W pieces lately, and it kinda stuck with me as I was drawing this one.
dkimblad- good point. I'll work it into the finished piece. |

Here's the next step. For this step, I switched over to Painter 6 just to keep things interesting for myself.
I basically just started tightening up the background by quickly roughin in the colors I'd like to have on the ocean, refining the column and the wall a bit, and blocking in the leaves a little. I sketched in the carving design just to test it out and see if it works.

It seems that every form that your mind can identify has been rendered with full value, ie going from full dark to full light. It makes things bounce quite a bit and look a little metallic. If the light source is the sun, maybe the entire figure could be rendered in very few value steps. Also, the local color of the skin, rock, foliage etc actually varies from surface to surface, but when you assign a full value range to all, as you have, this is lost. Tell me to try again if this makes no sense, or if this is intended, to be quiet. |

Wow, my first Spooge C&c.
*gets up and does the jig with a big silly grin*
I absolutely agree with you, except that knowing the theories and applying them when you have your own set of bad habits and short-sightedness, it becomes hard to execute those theories subjectively.
Believe me, I would LOVE to be able to work the C&C you gave into the finished piece, and I'm gonna try really hard to make sure it happens. BUT, my abilities are quite limited compared to some of the guys here, so I don't know if I'll succeed.
At this point, I even turned the piece back into B/W just to rework the values, since I was concerned about the sun not being bright enough when the light yellow SEEMED bright only in color, but not in value.
Maybe I have the whole value thing on my mind too much and always render things to death, while ignoring the fact not EVERYTHING shows full value range.
If I don't succeed, I'll try try try again. ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

high key, low contrast makes it feel bright. You can do it other ways too.
Low key low contrast would make it dark? Yes, I think so.
I guess what I was trying to say earlier is get as much as you can out of the shapes before applying rendering/values to the forms.
But keep in mind the shapes don't have to have hugely different values if the texture is quiet. By quiet I mean low contrast. The more active the texture, the greater the value difference between shapes must be in order for the shapes to read.
I shortened her torso a little and removed most of her shorts just to be safe.

wow the master of light....
anyway, could it be that the "bounce" is wetness? or is not hard edged enough... im not too sure when looking at it. |

Its cold in Canada, showing this picture to my friend will warm them up, the color will warm them up too!!
Craig, seriously, you need to do more pic like this, other pic you've done are great but they show lack of skin. Perhaps the female anatomy is your weakness? Are you trying to hide it from us? |

Holy Sh%t, Spooge. A picture is worth a thousand words. That helped a bundle! I can see the light now. . ..
Now I'm thinking about the answer you gave me about edges and contrast a while ago. Coupled with this new demonstration on light and contrast, I've just gained some new valuable stuff! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I think its good. Well it hasta be good cause Looney did it right?
Anyhoo I do have crits:
1; Who in god's name stands like that? That is a really awkward posistion. I see what you're trying to do here, but it just isn't working. The thing is it doesn't seem like here spin bends in your picture, she... well... she looks like a board. Maybe it's just me, hell, maybe I'm crazy (no doubt) but, I think at the very least her upper torso (belly up) should be bent and against the poll.
2; I like what you did with the leaves in the upper right.
3; Darker, needs more contrast, the subject is back lit and we need to see less detail and more high light. Little bit of relfected color could make this picture really interesting.
4; What if she was covering herself with a stretched out wing?
5; The hip area bothers me, pay special attention to that pelvic area. It is what should be "tense" and it seems kinda, unsure right now.
6; I think she should look more suprised. Like she was caught skinny dipping
Well. Take it or leave it. I might not be right on all, or any of these. But hell at least I will through some ideas your way. |
