Ive noticed something about this forum, everybody replies to pictures done by people that dont need a damn bit of help and fail to reply to anyones pics that could use some advice from those better than them. Well heres my pic, do what you will.

I hear ye:P, Then again, when you do get critiques, they are sometimes good ones, and you can learn greatly from them. And sometimes the style is such that you can't comment on things like value because they're say, posterized inked images. Anyways, I like the style of the piece, cartoonish and all, but the boots need more form. They look like vertical twinkies right now, and they're plain white. They might use some value. Other than that, study human form and muscles. I learned a lot from Andrew Loomis' book. I wonder if its still available online. |

I have a lot of trouble critiquing a lot of stuff because people fail to sometimes indicate what their goal is (a lot of the time it's obvious, but in this piece it's not). I don't want to start pontificating on anatomy if it's supposed to be anime or cartoonish. Sometimes people are merely working on their figure drawing and I start in on the composition elements.
OK, a little bit (and these touch on things very basic to a little farther on): his legs are too short(the center of the figure should be just at the crotch). None of the arm muscles actually look like that(a good anatomy for artists book would cover this). The pose is very rigid and unintersting (Bridgeman and Loomis have really good demonstrations of this). There are a few perspective problems (though only roughed in, we should see more of the top of the foot). Look in a full length mirror, or just notice people standing around. Art is 90% seeing.
There are pretty nice value changes in the figure, but there is no obvious light direction. There is little feel of background and foregraound, but I've always found that tough to do with only pencils.
Okay, that was pretty general. If you have any questions, let me know. |

Hey, that was great. Figures i should have to bitch in order to get a reply but whatever works. I did post this image before but i played with it a little bit and decided to post what more ive done. You both say Loomis, any way i can find some of this information without buying a book? Good little review there dogfood, very helpful. Its hard to become a better artist when you dont know whats wrong with your pictures. I have never drawn people, strangely enough. Mostly monsters n such. Ive been working on and off with human form for about 5 months and this was done about 3 months in, so shitty it may be but if i dont know why theres no way to fix it. BTW the boots arent even there Ewok, the basic outline isnt long enough and im undecided what to do with them. Thanks guys. |

Not bad. But for me this pic isn't intresting. There is nothing to draw my eye to the picture more than once. A more dynamic compisition would help. Try bring the viewer closer and/or up/down view point-wise. Also change the pose, dynamic is the key, perhaps crouching and you can bearly see the glint of his eyes under the cloak.
I also see some anatomy problems, but to point them out would be tedious. I know there is that loomis book somewhere on the net and if someone could post that here for him it would be great.
If you are going to draw insane superhero esque buff guys, try rendering them a different way. Less pencil shading and more solid line work. After the line work is down then go back and add depth.
hope it helps. |

Cal State San Bernardino dogfood. I got accepted into SDSU but chose to go to school 2 miles from my home. Cheaper that way. Did you even bother applying to UCSD? Found the full length Loomis Project, gonna take about 2 hours or so to DL on my little pussy 56k. Pretty cool that its offered for free. Everybody wants you to buy their books. Which i wish i could do but even attending a college i could walk to I cant really afford it.
Kenmasters, Farside he does look. And yea it is pretty sissyish. This pic was supposed to be just a model for a better pose but i never really left it alone. Thx for reply.
Jucas, Sounds like George Lucas shortened in a Jennifer Lopez, JLo, type way. Absolutely no offense intended. Have to say i agree, he looks harmless wearing a teddybear on his head and his arms are tweaked bad. He needs to see a doctor. Ill definitely try to work on what you said. I dont care for ultra buff super hero type people though, more realistic ummmm ripped type fellas. Thanks for your reply. |
