I just started using BeOS (UNIX based open source OS started at 1979) couple days ago.. it seems cool so far. Basically i could say its very stable (like Linux or FreeBSD) and its also easy (like Wincrap!) NICE.
Now it even supports some Lucent/USR winmodems! yay.. but still many stuff to be fixed and added in hardware department.
Okay now on to the graphics ability of BeOS.. There are not as many programs for BeOS out there as for say.. windows! For digi artists there is one way to go, which is The GIMP. One more program is being developed (the name of which i forgot) which is very much like Photoshop.
All other imaging programs i found were pure CR*P! There are quite a few 3d modeling programs and renderers, but i havent looked into that much.
What they say:
"Based on an entirely new idea in computing, BeOS was designed to satisfy the higher processing and memory requirements of today's digital media on standard PC hardware, without slowing down or freezing up. Work with audio, video, image, and Internet-based applications, and edit files of millions of gigabytes in size, simultaneously, in real-time."
Installation:
..is very easy! A lil' setup file which weights at about 50Mb, then you install it as an ordinary windows program. It creates its own "space where BeOS lives" which is 500Mb. Then to boot it you can just run it from windows, or use a boot floppy (for NT windows floppy is req'd).
Conclusion:
It all depends on things whether you wanna look at BeOS or not.. But if you have time, download it and check it out! Always interesting to check out something new (oh thats my personal opinion.. you dont agree --> i KILL you!)
