Hiya, been lurking(i believe the expression is) for some time now, and finally felt like posting something.

This is an illustration for an online game i'm working on. The final one is gonna be 240*320(smaller version too), so it can't be too detailed.

This one i just did for fun, and for learning stuff(because i still suck) .

Any comments and/or crits would be much appreciated.

Well hello there.

Two hm... 'mediocre' pics. Lately there has been a lot of pics like this in this forum and they all have one common characteristic - lack of basic skills. i.e. perspective, values, colours, anatomy, etc. I'm not saying it's a big mistake (damn i did it too ), but it should be solved while there's time. It will sure be a pain to cope with lack of perspective knowledge if you (somehow) get a job which includes some, let's say, concept artwork. That's a big disability, you know. For a past few weeks i've been keeping my wacom away and taking time to learn the basics properly. There's time to do all the things later. And they will surely look better with that knowledge in place.

I'm not saying it's wrong to do a few pics like this... just don't keep it that way. You will improve if you do a lot of these, if you just listen to comments. But that's the longer and harder way. Young artists usually like to take the 'easy' and 'cooler' way.

so, to summa summarum is:
1st pic - be very careful about the perspective, it's tricky, especially if the eye level is this low.
2nd pic - anatomy and perhaps shading. the eye is tilted, the nose is plain weird, and everything looks flat.

this is kinda rough, but i never considered the "oh, it's nice, but if you touched up the ... just a little bit" way the right one. it's the rough way or the mediocrity. and you don't want that, right?

do you have any other stuff to show? a webpage maybe?

cheers.

Thank you for the comments... Peter Pan.. *pffft*

Mr. T:

Thank you for your comments. One or two things i'd like to add, to that:
First off; I do not know the proverbial sh*t about sh*t.
I started doing 3d, a couple of years ago, but realised a while back, that i needed to learn basic stuff about art, if i ever actually wanted to earn a living( I, sadly, did NOT start drawing @ 3yrs of age ).
So, a couple of months ago(took me a while to figure out), i started trying to learn drawing/painting. This i did without any other teachers than you guys. Only now, do i feel that my "artwork" has reached a level, where it is "good" enough to receive any sort of critique.

ANY constructive advice/comment/crit, will be recieved with joy(Though i am not filled with ecstacy at this moment in time ). Advice on how to learn "the basic stuff" will be rewarded with kisses and hugs.

Some of my 3d-workings are to be found here.

Oh, and by the way, one question:
Do 24 years of age qualify me as a young artist, who wants to take the easy and cool way??

Thank you for reading this long(if indeed you have)

<edit> My spelling hasn't gotten any better, but give me a break, it isn't my native language </edit>

hi, I'm just starting out myself, I have only dedicated the last 6 months to full-time self training. Saying that "You're just a guy who does things wrong" IMHO is not the best way of welcoming a first-time poster... especially since I'll be doing the same thing in some weeks' time

That said, I don't think it's that bad, but I agree that the portrait is flat... many people on this forum will probably tell you to activate the colours more - put some variance into an area that is basically only a single Hue. And if the light source on the guy is over his head (as it seems to be), why has he no highlights on his nose/forhead/hair? On the ship, maybe you should consider doing a darker background 'round the sail, since there's supposed to be a small final version?

Better yet, compare it with a similar picture you find on the net... (there is always at least one) and try figuring waht is better/worse in yours... where's the problem area?

Hope I could help

Thank you Torstein. Comments like "I don't think it's that bad" ALWAYS cheer me up.

But seriously, thank you for your comments. I realise now, that the portrait is rather flat, uninteresting, and off(anatomically, as well as everything else-wise ). In it's defense it should be said, that it was a quickie, no more than 30-45 minutes. But hey, that's not really an excuse, because in that amount of time i should be able to(at least) get the proper placement of features. Ah well, rome was not built in one day.

And now, for your viewing pleasure(?); Another quick portrait(~1hr)

Feel free to crit my 3d-stuff too.
