Ok, I've roughed up a goblin in painter, I have an assignment to do an entire picture with one brush, and I chose round camel hair (hahah!). Well, anyway, I don't have much done yet but I promised my girlfriend I would post at the same time. We are both virgin posters. I'm an art student and she is learning as much as she can from me (she learns so fast!). She did the cloaked figure at the bottom and it was her very first digital painting (using dhabih's tutorial).

c&c would be very much appreciated on both.

the goblin: (base colors aren't even done)

the cloaked figure: (details still being worked on)

Thanks

Doing some thumbs and sketches before you jump into colouring will help you refine some sort of composition. Right now, the placing/pose looks accidental.

An important question is also, what do you think yourself ?? Are you (both) pleased with your results, is there something you would like to have changed. Are there any particular areas you feel you need more practise in when looking at these WIPs ??

Until you get to a very high level of skill, some sort of reference is usually needed. Drawings of motives like monsters cannot of course have a reference, since it does not exist anywhere else than in your own mind. Still a sound knowledge of anatomy is essential. I suggest using an image of a muscular man in a similar pose in addition to an image of maybe a gorilla or something like that, and then try to fuse them toghether on paper somehow, if you insist on drawing monsters before you can draw people.
(usually not such a good idea)

Just as important as learning how to draw, or maybe even more so, is learning how to use your own eyes and scrutinize your own work. Also look at other peoples work, and compare different aspects, such as how did they start the drawing, did they make a couple thumbnails first, then a more worked out sketch, and finally on to the main image and the colouring. It will help you more than asking others advice at this stage I think, as it is hard to say much else as a crit at this stage.

Have a look here, at this link Feng Zhu --> method of work

Studying how others work will also improve your own.

Thanks for the words and the link, I really like the steps/work shown there. I've lurked this board for a while and the thing I look for more often are the link to people's galleries and what not, amazing stuff. These were done from sketches, not character studies but single sketches that were scanned in and colored, when I get a chance i'll scan in some of my figure studies and sketches, and have her do so as well

I touched up the goblin a bit, but I think this is all i'm going to do on it for a while in favor of starting a better painting. Using one brush was fun, but it was much harder to blend, suppose it's good practice for that reason though.

And here are the sketches these pictures were made from:
