I can't seem to get these wing positions right, I even tried getting drawing them out on a larger canvas and then cropping back down to size, but it looks awkward. Anyone?

I like how you started out ... though the shape of the head seems weird. Although the picture does give a sense of enigma ... which I like.
About the wings ... what type of wings you trying to achieve? futuristic? eagle type fantasy? |

I'm trying to go for typical, eagle/bird like wings. They're fairly small. |

Well, just think of it this way: wings arc. Even when at full spread they're still arcing a bit. There really is no way for them to go straight out as a board from her back and still be winglike, unless you had them going a lot more back. They'd arc out of the back and quickly shape into a full spread. Also think about perspective, if you miss it, they look more pasted behind her than growing out of her back. Right now, sadly, that is what is happening here. From where I'm closing the origin points of the wings they aren't even coming from the centre of her back. Draw out a few guidelines detailing where the centre points are and where they are going, and then just keep in mind how they would be growing out of her back and you should be able to nail it pretty quickly. Good luck! |
