I found a few ancient 9 year old art in one of my old portfolios. I can reflect on how I use to draw in the those days when I wanted to be an anime style comic book artist.
I know they have anatomy problems.
One more here
ah the old days.
Here is one I am currently working on. I need to come up with better lighting and color. This is no where near finished.
Crits are welcome on this one...
I roughed in the lower face and torso area.
[edit] I have updated the old one with this newer one. Still pounding away at lighting and coloring.

I have updated the painting but 50megs.com is giving me a hard time again. So I'm sure everyone knows how to right click and blah blah.

hmm jebus it seems
the mood of the painting is really good the only thing I don't really like is the right arm. The foreshortening is messed up making it look like there is a fake little hand growing out of his head.

I'd definitely agree on the foreshortening.
The forearm is looking very stretched on the far side. I strongly suggest giving it some more work as it could really detract from the piece, which would be a shame since the rest of it works so well.
Sorry, I know it can be discouraging reworking a piece so much. I hate to suggest it.

dunno for sure, I don't think it needs to be shortened anymore. I know that the upper arms aren't quite long enough *don't mess with it though! it works on the other arm*
I can't really do a paintover, as this computer doesn't have my tablet and photoshop likes to crash. The arm is just bulged weird, not really defining any real muscle. The wrist seems too thin and the hand is quite deformed.
I would also suggest not so many highlights on the eyelids, it makes it look like a pupil-less eye, one evil jesus.
sorry I can't really show you, but someone else would be able to do it better than I anyways... *cough*pro*cough* |

hey indian,
I noticed pro hasn't replied yet, so I'll make my feeble attempt at helping. the problem with the forshortening is that it happens to quick and I think it's too high in relation to the shoulder (that's why it looks like it's growing out of jesus' head.) I did a paint-over to show you what I'm talking about.
you keep on getting better with your lighting and mass, but your images are still really desaturated in my opinion. I upped the saturation and kinda came up with an idea for the composition in about 10 mins. (the head in the air should be done with another head IMO. just didn't have time to draw it.) I also forgot to add the cold shadows for the warm light source. the idea behind it is to have a warm light source at night there must be people there with him with torches to see, or there is something "super-natural" going on. Sorry if I totally mutilated your picture, let me know if I crossed the line and I'll take it down.
frank
p.s. I also forgot to say that the horizontal of the cross needs to be foreshortened more on the left side. I love the subject, it's nice to mix things up a bit and get away from all the mechs, robots, and goblins to get back to something real. Also, no crown of thorns?

Hehe frank, no I actually tried to do a crown of thorns but couldnt do it without reference so I took it back off.
No feel free to do whatever you like with my paintings when it comes to paint-overs and things of that nature.
Does the hand itself look deformed to you, I need another opinion on that and then I'll re-do a more familiar hand position. I have it this way due to the fact of the spike in the wrist. The wrist looks kind of skinny, but I didn't and don't notice to much wrong with the hand.
Thanks for the comments, I am actually heading off t bed.
Peace |

the hand is wrong. it is deformed and it looks awkward because you have all 4 fingers and the thumb seperated in equal segments. think of the hand in it's basic shape without the thumb and then add a cone as the thumb. view the thumb and the rest of the fingers as 2 branches, rather than each finger being a branch. if you want to express strain, have some fingers bent at the first knuckle, some bent only at the second and third, and then bring the thumb in towards the center of the palm along with the pinky. (this is what my hand does whenever I do the whole strain in pain thing anyway. experiment with your own hand.) good luck!

the left bicep also appears too short(or the forearm is too long), and maybe the forearm is also a little thick. i see what you're trying to do with it and i'm no expert so i can't really help, all i can say is that it just "looks wrong" to me. but the i still like the mood of the painting even with the anatomy errors, so if you work these out it should be really good. |

Hi Indian Prophet-
Sorry I'm late with this. I have been so busy lately. I haven't had much time to get involved here. OK, so I did this overlay on paper for you. Your drawing is a bit off. One thing that may help is to first break down your shapes into simple forms. In school we called it the manikin. I'm sure you have seen the wooden doll in various art stores. The version I use has more of an anatomical shape to it. Be sure to think through the form if the head covers part of the arm do a tracing and draw through to make sure everything connects. As for the hand study it more. Look at your own and notice it has a natural tendency to take on the shape of holding or cupping something. This is of course is a relaxed palm. Now in this situation there is much pain involved to the human body. The hand of Jesus may be more closed depending on how you want to show it. I would say if necessary take a picture of your hand or better yet an actual cross statue. This is a tough pose you picked. Good luck always!
Greg

Hey Pro
Thanks alot for the foreshortening example. I usually don't do too bad with anatomy, but sometimes I totally miss something. I need to get some reference for those hard poses like a wooden figure, only I don't really like the ones at the art store. They don't have enough joints and are too limited when it comes to flexibility.
Thanks again for the example...
