Hi, Jolyon, a couple of things you might try is making the scene a lot more diffused. Think of your scene being in a thick blue fog.

And adding some bubbles might help too

Ok, you asked for an overpaint, I was inspired and I had some time to spare, hope it helps you. The image should speak for itself, basically you had two problems, your shading isn't reflecting diffuse bluish light coming from above, and you didn't have enough blue fog in the scene, as remarked by Blackpool. Oh, and by the way, you never see specular highlights under water.

Looks great Steven! How did you get the blue fog look? And the water ripples from above?

Thanks!
The fog? I picked a darkest color, and kept that for the darkest closest places, then almost a monochrome shading from there up to the lightest color, and making the darkest darks lighter further back.
The ripples? Paintbrushed with the lightest color, then a faint touch of big airbrush over it.

ah Steven, the painting itself has a nice creature design and you just gave it what it needed to have a punch. If I may, are you getting inspired to do a color piece yet?

hehe
Peace

Hi, thanks for the advice. I have to say colour is something Im rather new too. I havent studied it either, as you can probably tell. I used to mainly use pencil and fine black pens so getting into using a wacom has been excellent. Dont worry about going off topic, I just wanted to ask if you could post the image again, I get a bad link in my browser when trying to view the image you painted... so thatd be great (By the way Steven, have been an admirer of your stuff for years! Great work! And Pro, love the stuff on your site!)

Sorry ...sorry, talking bollocks again. The image is fine, just my weird and wonderful computer being its usual self Love the image, I can see what you mean looks grrreat. Im inspired to have a go again. I cant believe how off I was. Now its all so obvious... doh! These forums are such brilliant ways to improve, theyre incredible, I take my hat off to Dhabih and all of you for doing such a good job. Ill take my tongue out of everyones arse as soon as Ive explained why its in there (yuck) Ive seen peoples work on the internet for a while and tried to get in touch about techniques etc, but as of course everyone is extremely busy with millions of e-mails it must be difficult to reply to most of them, and im stuck in the South of spain (How terrible) and there really arent that many people interested in digital art so I have no other people around me that can inspire, criticise and help me develop. At least here you can see peoples pictures and give great advice. Love this place... Cheers
