Hi all,

I draw since couple of years now. I posted some of my drawing here,,, and I m really interested by doing Portrait. But, I Always think that my drawing didn t look really like the people I try to draw. They look like their cousins...HELP! Why... Is it normal??? You Professional portrait painter. Do you get this felling???

I dont just want to draw people from original picture to make another character...I know That I m am able to do this.

I always do my Drawing like this,,,I got the picture on my 2nd monitor. I never do painting over. Always by eyes!!!

I would be really interested to get comments (only on the face) from person who draw Real portrait of people by eyes... Is my drawing are good enough to say...Hey, Its looks like her!!!...Good Job!!! Or they are a poor copy of the person???

Thanks Vracky.
The following drawing aren t finished yet...

Here Irina...
I m particular proud of this drawing. I think, I got a stong ressamblance. What do you think. Is it good or not. It takes my about an hour to get the line.

Here Valantina...

I try for a whole day to get my drawing look like her...-

if you want to do professional portraits, resemblance is very important but you have to remember to flatter the people paying you. you have to make them look better than they do. just draw more from life. alot more. it's really helpful to know the shape of faces.

just so you know, geocities doesn't allow direct linking of images, so you'll have to post a link to an html file (even a simple 3-line one displaying your picture will do fine)... anyways, since i don't have a decent host, i'll put up the links for you:

Irina portrait (drag to address bar)
Irina ref (drag to address bar)

Valentina portrait (drag to address bar)
Valentina ref (drag to address bar)

okay, with those out of the way, on to the crits...
the first portrait needs more work to get a likeness... her mouth, for one, should be much smaller, and her nose seems a little crooked... nice work on the hair, though, imho (at least the bits that you've already finished)...

as for the second one, it's definitely much better as far as the likeness goes... however, problems still remain... take a look at the nose... it seems you've pulled the nose a little too far to the left (her right), so that the perspective looks off... also, on the whole, the features look somewhat tilted in relation to the face...

most importantly, however, is the lighting... both portraits were obviously done with a photo reference, just from the lighting alone (single, bright frontal light source)... this may be what you were going for, but try and keep it in mind anyways...

anyways, even though i've pulled up a fair number of crits, i think you've got a good start... good attention to detail in some areas... just keep practising, really, and it'll all start falling into place...

cheers,
teck

ps. both the girls are positively gorgeous, if you don't mind me saying...

hmm can i ask you a question. So you want to make a living as a portraitist?? Well do you know of anyone that send pics to you and will pay you enough to make a digital portrait of them??? I see people comming to a stand out side and you paint them in real life in a limited about of time. At a fair or sidewalk down town i see poeple doing that. And i see people wanting you to paint them traditionally im not too sure about the digital part Unless you can bring wacom, computer, laptop or whatever.....
Or do you just paint for fun and do digital portraits..

anyway either way GREAT work.. i like the last one best.. looks like the girl in the pic. her body needs some work.

Just work at it and leanr face anatomy.. try to understand why the face is shape such a way and where which muscle is ect.. seriously by understanding what's beneath the skin will help you alot.. Its all about structure ... Good luck and keep working at it youll get there..

Jr: Thanks for your comments, I ll try to draw more from life.

Lotekk: I agree for the mounth. I agree that all feature are titled a bit in relation. But to make a good portrait of a person (from pict or life)...Do I need to be a photocopier??? - Perhaps, I m having hard time to catch the caracteristics that made a person. A street portrait painter dont have the chance to check accuratly on a picture what is going wrong...And His drawing looks like the person most of the time. Even if the nose is drawn a bit to far to the right...Why?

Here the link were I take these babe. Its an dating agency of Russian model. There are many really good model there if semeone want to make some portrait drawing: Or to find a beautifull date. -

(Go to Russian women aged 18-24)
web page

Wigin: No, I dont want to make living by doing portrait. I just want to get more skill...and its hard!!! But this what I love when I draw. Real street portraitist make a portrait in 15-30 min, It takes me more than 1-2 hours just to get the main line down. I draw for FUN! But, I always get desapointed that my face drawing looks like their cousins. Thanks for your comments too!

Here you can find 2 portraits I made...With ref picts. Have a look.
My 2d page

I waiting for more comments... Thanks

i looked at your website, and i have to say that while the actual likenesses of your portraits aren't exactly there, they are close... and more to the point, your rendering is gorgeous... plus, you have emmanuelle beart, who i think is positively gorgeous...
