Awesome work. I love the way the hooves fade into the dust. When I can paint as well as you I will feel that I have the right to critique.

Spidermonkey:
In a couple of weeks I have become a better "painter" on the sole basis of giving critique. It opens your eyes...It has opened mine atleast, so give it a shot

oKKun:
Great stuff, really up there! Something seems to be missing though...Also her cloak looks a little weird, highlight and shoadow problem I think...

Keep 'em rolling!!

Thanks both of you, I fixed the cloak.

Also, I think I'll redo the head of the horse so it's not pointing straight and maybe work a little more on adding patterns to clothing and armour. We'll see if that helps

I'm absolute awestruck...
After seeing this I'm determined to learn how to render realistic faces.
I always seem to muck up around the eyes and with lighting and a great many other things. But after seeing this increadible piece I really really wanna try and do it. *chuckle*
Thanks for the oomph!

wow, the girl is a huge improvement over the one in your original post of this pic!

one little niggling thing, though: is she meant to be riding without a saddle and stirrups? the straps and faceplate on the horse suggest both, but she doesn't have her feet through any stirrups...

but anyways, that pic is simply awesome...

[edit] whoops, one more thing i noticed... the cape she's wearing seems to be flapping the wrong way for her apparent direction of movement... [/edit]

Yeah, I killed that girl completely I don't know what I was thinking

I re-did the horse head, it looked way to flat compared to the girl. I'm still not done adding stuff like patterns and small things I don't even know the name of but here's an update.

Yeah, really nice, better, oKKun!
But now the horses front right leg looks twisted

Ok Suhokai,
First reaction: Awesome and I wish I could paint like that. Second reaction:
I get a slight feeling "off balanced" feeling about the rider in relation to
the horse. I am not sure if it would be possible for the rider to ride
straight up when the horse is at an angle and thus all the force is at an
angle. Shouldn't there be some sort of counterbalance?

Above all, it is really beautiful!

spidermonkey; argh, I think you might be right there. I've got a nasty habit of flattening layers as I go along.. This could pontentially be very difficult to fix I was hoping the foot in the stirrup would help as she's almost standing on it but I guess I still have some work to do

Sukhoi; Yeah, I removed the changes I made to the legs but it still looks a little twisted, I wish I had a better anatomy reference for the horse, I must have looked at every horse image on the internet so far and I can't find a good one to help me with that yet, but I'm still looking.

All; thanks for the great feedback!

I do not believe that the positioning of the rider upon her mount is that big a problem. The picture is dynamic, and that is what you want to achieve.

Personally, I wouldn't doubt her ability to right herself in the saddle so she could take aim and fire with the correct trajectory, she is a mounted archer, after all.

I have to compliment you in particular on the intensity in her facial expression. I truly believe that whatever is in her sights will have an arrow shaft through it's heart in about 0.2 seconds

Only one crit: Compared to the rendering of her face and upper body, her left(our right) lower leg and foot lack detail. Not a serious problem, and you probably had it on your list anyway.

I also had a some quick questions.
Are you using a graphics tablet like a wacom for this?
Why do you prefer coloring a grayscale image as opposed to laying colour directly onto the sketch?(I used to use this method for texture mapping, but abandoned it.)
When painting using grayscale, what tool/method are you using to shade/gradient(burn/dodge, or pbrush, etc)?

Thanks Benjamin,

I'm using a wacom tablet, airbrush with default brushes (4th row in php6) and I pick colors from the picture when painting so the only key I use while painting is ALT

This is actually my first grayscale image and the further along I get I seriously doubt that I will be able to color it. All test I've done so far makes is look like a Richard Corben picture, he's cool and all but I don't think that's what I'm looking for here..

pic is very convensing and plausable . I hve read you comments and you do not intend on adding colors ,so could I take a shot at coloring it ? Just curious to see how it would turn out !

Wow I really like your picture and I think you did a beautiful job so far.
What do you mean with default brushes in php6 do you mean the faux finish brushes ?

Ok, I think this is it for now. Added some more muscles to the horse, I hope that fixes the "crooked leg" thing. I might go back to this and color it later but I feel like I should move on with something else

Hello oKKum, I forgot to ask you what style you were looking for ? I knew however you did not want it to be cartoon . I did a quick
color to see what you think . I know you had something in mind .So let me know what you think .

Heh, cool, it looks very oldschool fantasy

I didn't have a particular color scheme in mind actually, I just couldn't get anything to work myself.

I like the soft colors, I would go a little easier on the green though.

I might give it a try after I finish my next painting.

First, all respect to the pic, it looks great! Just one or two comments on the 'suspension of disbelief' thing to make it a worthy fantasy piece; The bow looks a little like a big Recurve, sorta hard to shoot while riding. And her draw hand, she's only holding the nock of the arrow and not the string at all. Totally nitpicking, but that just struck me as odd. Just think it makes it more believable, but that is just one Archer's opinion. Looks good, mate, and of course, in Fantasy art, anything can happen, eh?

Thanks, never thought about the bow size. I did plan on changing the hand though but I must have forgot about it, I used to do archery too

Thanks for the comments ,I like that Oldschool comment ! The green is on a layer by itself set to color . I thought the colors were to bright for the setting ,but after looking at it on my low res monitor at my office I see what you mean .The green is over powering the pic . Do you mind if I show this on other forums ,giving you due credit of course ?
