hey all...thought i would contribute some more to this thread...this isnt my usual stuff so dont get all crazy...i just had to "loosen" up...i needed to take a break from the detailed pencil work. so i pulled out the ink well and did the first pic...then i got a brown paper bag and sketched in pencil and added highlights with white prisma pencils...hope you all like them. i plan on doing more pencils for the thread...
i guess the next pic is like a government mercenary or something (what is it with me and skulls)? anyways...the skull is more like a mask that has been grafted to his face.

arkoh - Very interesting thoughts. I totally agree that humans would build things to remind themselves of the good old days. I also like the idea of huge foundations for the modern building to be placed in juxtaposition with the old buildings. The feel will be like a giant stepping on some insignificant village!
Maceface - I love the first drawing. I love inks. I just have one problem!!! I CANT SEE THE SECOND PIC!! Can you fix that? I am really looking forward to seeing it!
Never fear all, I am working on a new picture. My productivity did go down a lot due to my adventures into Return to Castle Wolfenstien, however I am now working on a sublevel image. I guess we start from the bottom and work our way up.
This is part of the image I'm working on.
mmmm looks like I have to come up with all the submarines too - that doesnt seem to take anyones interest.

All right then... you asked for it, so you'll get it anyway! Well I actually desided that this sketch really wasn't anything you could use for anything but the way you are talkin about doing all the submarines on your own, with such a deep sorrow in your "voice", made me deside that what the heck, function or no function... detailed or not detailed... this is just a quick sketch I did for fun, of a craft I noticed in one of my other perspective drawings I have posted. Actually in that drawing it was an airborn craft, but to me it looked more like a submarine than anything else.
To me it looks alot like a workin submarine, or a patroling policecraft ( dont know if the missils/harpoons are for peacefull construction work or serious buisness!??), and the tentacles that seems to be floating along might be to provide the pilot of this thing with a possibility to grap stuff or hang on to something... dont know! But what the heck, here's a thing that might do for a submarine concept!! No function, No detailing, but it might just go as my contribution to the submarine section!

Maceface - I can now see second the image!! I love that you used a brown paper bag. You draw excellent characters. (I don't know what it is with you and skulls) but its ok by me. It certainly would be scary to try and fight a guy with a skull mask on!
Ok maceface - I have a CHALLENGE for you. (and anyone else whose interested)
The sublevels of the city are a hard, dirty and violent place. The city needs riot police. Can you draw a riot policeman and perhaps his vehicle in the background!
Arkoh - I was just teezing about having to do all the submarines. I love to try and think of some. I love this whole world being created my eyes. Its wonderful.
Yes, I saw the aircraft that looked like that in your earlier post. They make fantastic subs!! There is some resemblance to jelly fish, and it also reminds me a little of the maintanence pod in 2001 a space odesy.
I think they are terrific. You are a great concept artist and I really enjoy all your contributions.
The picture im working on is taking a bit of time. I will try and get some more drawing done on sunday and post it.
I hope you all have a great weekend!! catch up soon.

Maceface - your guy looks awesome. I love his face and helmet. He looks like he wants to kick some! very cool man. You say you are colour blind - is that red/green colour blind or what is it you see? (if you dont mind me asking) BTW - your friends told the truth about the colours!
Thanks a lot mace. I will post my pic when its finished - its taking me a while to do (dont know why, I dont normally spend more then three hours on something!! lol |

Whoa, this post is turning into an incredible behemoth! Where to start?
Arkoh - once again your ideas inspire us! I can imagine all the junk sitting at the bottom of the sea floor would float to some degree, allowing figitives in small submarine craft to dive in and hide from pursuing militia craft. That image of the subs with the tentacles that you posted - they could be heat-sensors or turbulence sensors to track the enemy craft it pursues. The multiple sensors are required to draw information from a wider area that what's around the sub.
maceface - More cool sketches from you. The b/w cop in uniform has a very striking line-style that shows more shape and detail that what's actually been drawn. I really like it!
But the full-colour pic you've done of this riot cop is excellent. Pretty interesting how you worked out what the colours are (I'd say your friends were as keen to see the finished full-colour pic as you were ) I like the floatation collar, the helmet he's wearing and the shotgun you've given him. He definitely looks like a law enforcer of the underworld!
The government merc looks good as well with the cheap dirty vest he's wearing, too. I think you should put a little more detail into the boots of this guy and the riot cop, as too little detail can make them stand out from the rest of the image. Looking forward to more of your stuff, maceface.
Shiro_Tengu - This is turning into a full-time job for you isn't it? ;P
Someone mentioned that at depths of 2000 feet, humans could only survive by breathing liquid oxygen. This just expands the possiblities no end! If it were possible to make the oxygen mixture heavier than water, the cities wouldn't even need to be covered!
SWANY - I don't think it'll end any day soon. Might as well post something, huh?
This is something I drew up unplanned in an hour. It's a cyborg with robotic gills in the shells on it's back and two guided super-captivation launched discs mounted to it's arms, as well as heavy harpoon launcher on it's shoulder.
I've done this in markers after seeing the way Feng Zhu does his artwork. It's a medium that shouldn't be over-looked as it's still REALLY fast, even faster than the mighty Wacom sometimes. I also used markers because I left my Wacom at work... again
What's it for? Erm, no idea. Up to you guys, i guess. |

hey highfive...looking sweet! i love the markers (i use prisma i would assume thats the norm) i would say thast some sort of tunneler OR a "security" bot that patrols the slums and hacks up anyone out past the curfew
i see what you mean with leaving out the details...thats what one of my friends mentioned also...so looks like i should change them up a bit. and thanks for the comments
and as for shiro saying this..."mmmm looks like I have to come up with all the submarines too - that doesnt seem to take anyones interest." ill see what i can pull up. it may be a while cuz i have finals (art college and god damn if they dont pile it on you) and then i leave for xmas vacation...away from my comp....ahhhhh oh well that should give me ample time to make some more pencils...i might do the sub in a 3d program...we'll see.

maceface - My pleasure. yeah its a select few which frequent this thread and that is fun, as well as some rare appearences by some seriously cool artists. Its been such good fun. I hope you enjoy your break!
highfive - nice work mate. That is one scarey piece of work! If thats coming for you I would say you would be in some serious trouble.
I enjoy using pantone markers, myself. All my colour ones are dry now but I still use the cool greys.
I feel like doing one in markers now lol. |

Allright... soooooo up to the challenge Shiro... A riot policeman and his "vehicle"!!!
This one somehow turned out to my own liking!... Have NO idea how!! Only wish I had some more time!!! But my last bus leaves in 15 minutes, so this is what will have to do!
Dont really think I'll try and explain my way out of this one (NOT much to explain!!), just maybe it'll give you some kind of inspiration Shiro... and if not... then once again: "what the heck, I enjoyed myself!!!"
btw. Same as the others before me... Thanks Shiro, for getting this thread going! It has gotten me started doing drawings I had never done before, finding inspiration in places I had never looked before... mmmmm It suits me, BIG time!!!

Cool Thread, Just got 1 suggestion read a book called "The Moon is a harsh Mistress" It's a simarlar concept set on the moon which is a penal colony...
It's by a guy called Robert A. Heinlein (same guy that did starship troopers)
The basic plot is that A computer technician becomes involved in a rebelion against the controlers of the colony.
Thats not the main reason why I bought it up...
It's because it is set in artificial caves, and it describes how they cope with life within these "habitates". thought it might be a good reference for the layout + transport, etc.

I'd like to try to contribute with something.
Oxygen is created by algae because their photosynthetic metabolism is quite larger than their respiration (because of their rapid growth and reproduction). Anyways...this water-filled dome here would have lamps (the bright dots) floating in it to provide light for the plants. The oxygen is represented by the big should-be air-bubble at the dome's foof.
I did this in 15(?) minutes or less...but i think it gets the idea across.
What do these people do for food? grow crops? does anyone ever get to the surface? |

Here is my take on the quasi scifi aspect about light underwater:
I recon I saw on Discovery once about building underground, where you could direct sunlightning through "light canals". They work much like optic fiber, where light is totally reflected on the surface of the fiber. (Think about those hairy lamps that were so popular...) But instead of using fiber, you use big canals to direct the light from the surface instead of using a weaker light source.
Now, consider in these underwater caverns (or the dome variant, but I kinda prefer caverns) there are fusion reactors. I mention fusion reactors since they rely on sea water, which is quite plentiful there. Inside these reactors, when running, they omit light and heat. Now, try to direct some of the light (very little of it) from these reactors through the light canals mentioned above to the underwater farms, squares and hallways.
Hopefully one can use this light to grow plants, algeas and stuff that is needed in the underwater city. Hope it solves that problem.
I wish I could contribute with some art but I'm rather tied up for the moment. Good luck guys! |

Hi Guys - yes this site is still alive - JUST TAKING A SMALL BREAK FOR CHRISTMAS!! Unfortunately my bloody scanner is not working!! Anyway - I want to thank everyone for their efforts in my absence, and say happy Christmas to you all. 2002 is about to start and I belive it should be a good one. At least it should be free of Talibans and our art skills should improve as well. So thats all good.
Novacaptain - hi there! Thanks for those cool thoughts. You have some excellent ideas. Yes the population will be fed the submarine agriculture and underwater greenhouses. Livestock and so forth will be utilised in artificial environments. All that methain from the cows could be used to supply energy, lol.
Do people get to the surface? Yes. The main character and a group of soldiers get to the surface. If the general public do - well that will depend on the outcome of the story!!
Spike.com - very interesting Ideas. I like the light canal ideas. I would love to see peoples interpretations of how to draw them. Great ideas, thanks.
SporQ - Nice rendering. genetically enhanced fishmen is a great idea. Also the social problems it would cause would be a great enhancement to the story. Would they be treated as mutants or as the elite by the general public. How would they get along with more human people?
See you all next year!!!! or in a couple of days.

ok, i had to resurrect this thread, cause i had an idea, instead of the government developing all this different scuba gear and stuff for thier underwater security force, what if they got into genetic engineering. making a fish guy that could survive in the water and under all that pressure. here is my take on that concept. dont know if you are still workin on this shiro, but what do ya think?
long live this thread |

Hi everyone. Happy new year. Its time to get back to work and back to play. I will be posting pictures soon and setting out some more ideas for requirements for this new world.
I am happy to say that I have just purchased a new computer. A pentium 4 1.8 gig with 512 rdram etc Its getting built now, Hopefully I pic it up this week and will be able to crank out some art at last.(after the funerl for the other one)
So are we all agreed that this city is mainly in submarine caverns as Arkoh had conceptulized. I think thats the way to go.
I find I am not very good at conceptulizing architecture. Does anyone know any good sites which could assist in architectral concepts?
It was suggested that I look at artificial limbs in order to get ideas for cybernetic body parts. This has proved difficult as the technology for artifical limbs is in mimicing the exact look of the real thing.
now...
as the story progresses it will lead to the surface dwellors. The surface world is arid and desert like. Extremely harsh but survivable. If anyone has ideas of what this people will look like and dress like, I would love to see your impressions. What the towns and dwellings would look like.
Any thoughts or ideas. |

i had a few ideas along the desert theme, and just started doodling in photoshop...
i figure cowboys knew what they were doing, wide brim hats, thick clothes, to keep the sun off. added some goggles to help with the glare...
maybe sometimes donning masks to help with breathing, not sure what the enviroment would be like...
and i kinda picture them living in submerged bunker typed dwellings, leaving little exposed to the elements...
anyway, just some sketches to get the juices flowing. |
