So I just found these forums...and its made me want to go back to drawing again. The talent here is incredible
I've been working on this little doodle, but I'm not really happy with how its turning out (not well enough defined)...its supposed to be a little house in a hill, sort of rocky and grassy - but I feel like its not hard enough.
I usually work in pencil, and this tablet + paint thing is sort of new to me, so any suggestions or tips would be great.

Hello eyre-
Welcome to the forum! I'm new here too. I saw your work here and noticed you were looking for suggestions. So I hope you don't mind me stepping forward with this critique.
When it comes to painting be it figures, rocks, trees, robots or cars the principles are always the same. Objects are revealed to us by light. We use carefully selected values to explain the form. Try to think of objects revealed to you by the light. As you can see I didn't paint a doorknob.... I merely suggested its presence to you by a few carefully placed values.

Wow! That's amazing. That captures exactly what I was seeing in my mind's eye.
Now I'm going to have to spend the rest of tonight trying to get from point A to your point B.
Thanks for the input ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Hello there.
I think what Pro has said and done has pretty much cleared everything up of what there is to say really. Although, he's made it look easy.
If you're not using a Pen tablet, (it looks like you are using soft pastels) go in there with a select shade of pencil to bring out the details. Also, a good tip to add great hi-lights is to use a rubber. If you need to feather (rub out with a gradient) use bread. Grab a slice of bread, mould it and softly rub at the pastel.
If you are not using pastel, I feel stupid.
Now that Pro has left you a reference, you should find this one easy.

I think eyre did this on the computer. The critique I did was also done on the computer (Photoshop 6). I do like your bread trick for pastel though. |

Yeah, it was taken from an original pencil sketch, then colored/added to on the computer using a graphire.
