Alright I am throwing this one together and wanted to get some advice on the skin coloring on this one. This was created from scratch in photoshop so far. Goofy me hasn't worked with coloring in layers yet or playing around with textures. I know how to color in layers and so forth but haven't found a tut on how to texture things within photoshop. I am almost sure it isn't that define pattern and fill thing because that well...can't be it with the tiling. I'd like to texture the potato fruit but don't know how or where to start. Tuts anyone?
if anyone wants play around with background concepts go ahead or lighting effects or anything of that sort. This thing is straight out of my head so different perspectives are welcome. Lord knows I don't have lighting down yet.
Peace

as usual 50megs.com gets a little funny after a fresh update so just right click and copy the URL in a new window if you can't see it. I've put this one on hold until I can get some advice...don't want to go back and change a thousand things after completing.
PS Ideas are welcome also. |

I really like this stuff from you. Some definate personalities coming out the the subjects. I see forests, myst and swamp areas for these guys. Perhaps some rocks?

Cool stuff here.. I like the gator/dinosaur creature, looking good. The half mouse half man thing reminds of some Lovecraft tale..although he didnt eat cheese
Adding a wider range of values with a bit more contrast would help. Maybe vivify the colors somewhat(unless its intentional, there does seem to be an overwhelming sense of gray here..)? |

The first one reminds me of dr suess, for some reason. I agree with blindside, the bodies need more contrast (the faces are great) |

Rustriva, I was JUST coming here to make the Dr, Suess comment
I think these are really cool. Great concepts, the paintings themselves need a little tightening up as they are a bit blurry. That has already been pointed out though. Be sure to post them when you're done, they show a lot of promise |

I would like to finish these if I can get some advice on making the coloring more realistic. If anyone has the time, please give me an example of how I am going about coloring wrong.
Note: The body on these are not done, they are just roughed in.
I need:
Help on coloring realistically
Help on lighting realistically
Thanks

WOW! Thanks a million. I feel like I owe you money for some reason
This helps alot both in coloring and lighting. I've saved this to my HD for future reference as well. I am still in awe a bit. You've taken my flat creatures face and brought it to life. Well, enough said...I want to get started on this.
Thanks again.

Ok I am working on getting some of this lighting and coloring down. Pro I didn't go with the teal green to accent because I had a rough time blending it in so for now, I have used the regular lighting. I did decide to go with your alternative forehead & brow form. Oh and as you can see I thought the ears might make it a little more interesting. Critiques are welcomed. And I added some pathetic texure to the potato fruit but I did do it by hand as recommended. So I am trying...hehe

Hey Indian Prophet-
Great job!!! You're headed in the right direction. I love the ears too. The lighting your using is a diffused light source which is fine if that's what you want. But keep in mind edges. Keep it moving, I like it!

I dunno, I really LIKED the ears the way they started. It seemed to fit the face better, they drew the attention into his eyes, where the personality is... It now seems to be looking more like a painting, but less like a character... Know what I mean? I liked the grey tones too, he seemed to fit sort of a "Golum" role. Oh, maybe put a worm in the bottom of the fruit for fun... As for textures, most of the best stuff I've seen is done by hand. I'd take a shot or scan of what you want to make, and blow it up as a study. All the texture filters I've seen seem to look like they were done with filters... Hope this helps... |

john,
The character in this painting is not so important as the lighting and color scheme. The brow change is for the better when trying to understand lighting, the other shape is more complicated to light. The color scheme change from the first to the latter is for the better too because you can toy with different colors to accent where as to grey, well...it would be more complicated to accent for me anyway. As far as the picture looking more like a painting that is the direction I wanted to go in order that i can learn to paint instead of just coloring a character. I have drawn comic style characters for nearly 20 something years and am currently taking classes over at St. Francis University where character concept is only one of a few different crucial factors in creating a painting. In short, I'm not focusing on this character as much as trying to learn coloring and lighting.
As far as the worm Idea, not too shabby of an idea. Eventually, I would like to tighten in some more details like that, that along with making it ACTUALLY look like he is eating something too...i.e. fruit flesh on the lips...
Well for the ears, I changed it because it gave me a little more surface to deal with on the head, which is what I need right now.
Thanks for the comments
Peace |

Hi Indian_Prophet!
I'm sorry on not commenting directly on the lighting as you requested, but felt that this was important also. I see an anatomical problem in the neck area, which might provent people from reacting solely to the light problem.
I liked the original ears better too, but ofcourse see your point, light-wise...
Kepp up the good work!!
