This is sort of a rough fantasia from memory around the "monkey-man" of Indian-Prophet's "Hairy Problem" post. I saw the site for the first time today, and couldn't get the damn image out of my head. I thought it was only fair to subject y'all to my version. I notice that I don't quite have the depth/contrast thing pegged. I was hoping for some juicy tips. Any and all are welcome...

Here he is, phase 2... Thanks for the help guys. I re-designed the nose, changed the color scheme, got rid of those silly moon beams (What was I thinking???) and enhanced the highlights on his right side. Still a WIP, so rip it to shreds please... Grins- J

Volumetric light is usually straight. This means the rays shining from your light source shouldn't be curved like the one that covers Bigfoot's chin. Light rays also tend to have a uniform falloff, meaning that as they get further from their source they have less strength. That chin ray looks freakishly strong.
I like the colors though. If this were my piece, I'd take advantage of the light source being behind the subject to illuminate some of more the hair along the edge of his body. You've got an excellent start on this along the top of his head, but you can make the highlight even brighter (possibly as strong as the color of your light source itself) because stray hairs in these positions gather and reflect a lot of light.

Hehe, well, this certainly is a good start. You have some reflective light going on which is good. It's in the basement man...my visual anywayz. I like this picture. The nostril's need to be lined up a little better. |

oh and I agree with pat too, you could take some brighter light along each shoulder. For instance, on its left side, you could make the very edge bright and along the right side light would reflect threw the tips of the hairs making them somewhat transparent. |
