I like my rough sketches better than finished pics. Seems the further I take a picture (through ink, colour, whatever), the worse it looks.
Some sketches:
Generic stuff
More generic stuff
Trying a looser style
Very quick inking practice
None of these are really "works in progress", but crits and comments are still welcome :-) |

Give us an example of what you are doing to ink and color them. Post a finished colored one and maybe someone can give you advice on a better approach to finishing a piece. I would say these are illustration style characters or comic book type (my opinion). So color accordingly. Use bright colors. If you want to add a little more realistic value in the coloring process, you'll have to add a little more shading to each figure.
Very nice work, I admire your style.

Rusty, nice. First I must say that your technical skills of drawing are as you already probably know are masterful. But what makes me jelous is that you have such a understanding of the figure and what it does. The sketches are great because you are not just drawing them standing or sitting, but they are placed in inspiring poses. Beautiful, really beautiful stuff. I would also like to see more, do you have a web site link for us?

Indian Prophet: You're right, I've mostly drawen comic/cartoony style before and am only now trying to move towards a more realistic look. Eg
Nomad (I think this is sort of what you mean about extra shading being needed if I use more realistic colours?)
Cow mask thing This is ok but the pose 'stiffened' the longer I spent colouring it.
Basement Bound: Thanks very much, and yes I do have a site - riva.i85.net |

Yea the cow mask thing is very neat. I believe it has an in-between look (comic-realistic). Of course with realistic painting (i am still learning myself) you want to avoid hard lines where they aren't needed. Well I am off to check out your site...Im sure I'll be impressed. |

Your drawings are quite fluid.. me likes
Your sense of form is well developed, although I think some of the musculature could be refined a bit. In some cases, the seem to "sag" somewhat, specifically the women wearing shorts in the second image. The interior calf muscle seems much lower than it should be. If you could tighten that aspect of your drawings up, they would look even better IMHO. |

rustiva: I really like the style. your sketches are very fluid and full of movement. I like 'em.
Anyway, thought I'd give you some suggestions on how to "loosen up" your paintings. first, I find it helpful, if you're using photoshop, to decrease the opacity of the brush and make brushstrokes in the direction you want the movement to go. make the strokes fluid and quick. spending to much time drudging over detail has ruined many of my pictures. second, if you're wanting a more realistic look rather than a comic book one, try scrapping the outlines in your paintings. nothing in life really has outlines, everything is just shapes of color with added volume (a wee bit simplified, but it'll do for now.) most of the good artists I see simple place colors first to make sure everything is fundamentally correct then they go on and add their shading. shape first, volume next, details last. (the ever famous quote from my art instructor.) anyway, this is pretty measly, but I hope it helps. I'm just learning how much different painting is than drawing. two different worlds. but aren't we all just learning? heh. btw, wonderful pose on the sketch of the two holding hands.

Wow, you're very talented. You have a unique style. To me, it is really refreshing to see both confident line work mixed with imaginative ideas and concepts. I hope you don't abandon your current style, I think it is very appealing. Keep up the great work! |
