well, I've been doing 3d models and skins for games for quite a while now, but recently after finding goodbrush.com and then later this forum, I was inspired to try some fine art using photoshop.

The first piece I did was made after seeing the speed painting thread in the gallery forum. It turned out ok (not good enough to show here though )

This piece here I've worked on for a little over an hour. Its taken from a vid cap of The Rock. tell me what you think.

and if you really want to see the first crap one go here: crap painting...

Ummm, you could've trimmed off all that negative space for starters. The proportions are done well, just have a little beef with his mouth.

Resizing it would help also. Not everyone has an OC-3 connection to the internet, surfing at 4000x3000 resolution :-)

Uhmm, What is this? Did you paint this or smudge the referance image? I'm just not sure what exaxtly you did here. If you painted it, then it's a great start . If you simply painted over (smudge and blured) the ref image then I don't think you're taking the right approach to learning what you're trying to learn.

no no, I didn't smudge it. I had the reference pic above the actual piece I'm working on. No, not a seperate layer either. Just above it so I can compare easily, no different that painting from a photograph.

If you look at my first attempt by clicking on the link, you'll see that what I'm doing is just a more refined, less stylized type of painting.

I kinda like more rough made paintings. mostly brush made and no smudge.

I do that cause smudge is easy to abuse, and i think you have done that. If you take a look on your pic and then on the ref pic you can see that yours looks very out of focus, blury. Im not saying you shouldnt work with the smudge tool. Just dont overestimate it.

I still think its a great pic youve made.
Maybe i'll try it myself if you dont mind.
Always good with training

So here is my try at it.
Not so happy how Nicolas Cage tourned out.
I think i overworked him.
But im quiet happy how Sean Connery turned out tho, made him as fast as i could and got a good result.

It took overall about 1.5 h

damn you! just had to make it better than mine the first time I try to spend time on something. Well it can only get better for me I guess. I still haven't found a style that I entirely like. I guess I'll still finish this piece but really think on how to do the next one.

I concur with your thoughts entirely on your piece though.

thanks exo. the fact that its out of focus is what I was going for though it is exaggerated. If you look at the reference pic you see the Cage is not the emphasis of the scene, Connery is. Cage is a bit out of focus in the film at this point.

I should be working on it a little more tonight, you'll see the difference. Hopefully

aight, so I've decided to change technique in the picture so it'll probably not ever be a finished piece, just a study.

I tried to do something in between my cage and your connery for my version. It was done in a lot less time than cage.Connery is definately not done, as seen most prominently in the cheeck. Maybe I'll fix it up at school tomorrow. soo here it is.

Very nice work... My only problem with it is it looks just like a photograph. I work pretty much entirely from phorographs myself. One of my first rules of thumb (which of course always has exceptions) is to find a "paint" spin in every picture that makes it visually clear a photograph is not being viewed. I guess I see little purpose in struggling to paint a photograph when the photograph and/or photo-manipulation can do it so much better...

I like to see the strokes, the very evident painterly input. My 2 cents...
