Hey all,

I'm studying this thing called Computer Arts at a university in Dundee, Scotland. And for one of the classes I'm doing this project that I'll be presenting in Quake 3. Unfortunatly I just learned that my deadline had been pushed up several weeks, so I'm currently in quite a hurry to finish this thing.

Anyways I'm texturing most of the thing from ground up, and this is what I did the other day . Any feedback, comments and advice would be greatly appreciated. I do have some more, but these I think represent the set pretty well.

It's worth noting that this is my first ever attempt at texturing anything, and so far I must say that it's been a teaching experience (to self: remember not to merge all layers and close source file!!)

Lights light up

This lights up, check the screenshots

This is transparent, check the screenshots

All in all when the project is done (any day now) it will represent the circle of life from birth to life to death. It's sort of an attempt to bring art to the realm of interactive entertainment.

And yes, the polycounts and compile times are absolutely horrific and out of this world

PS: Had to do several posts for all the images.

The pure bricks texture that I used. Of course I had to make it tileable first and stretch it a bit back and forth...

Pillar.. I have a base for this one as well.

This is the start of the round steel thingie on the wall in the first post.

And here's some screenshot of it all in the first room I built with it:

And this is from the same project, so I thought I'd throw it in as a special edition collectors tin box ultimate version thing... yeah

they're pretty good, but the metal over the bricks looks a lot newer than the bricks do.

Holy Shit.

This is way out of my league, but it looks complex enough to me. Ten stars. The textures isolated are much more fun to look at than the final work. Kind of makes you appreciate everything -- the model shots have too many shadows to realise it otherwise.

EDIBLE SNOWMAN:
Yup, that was what I was aiming for, so it's intentional.

It has to do with the fact that even though we today have a lot of technological, cultural and knowledge improvements (the metal) it's all still based on the past (the bricks). Standing on the shoulders of giants so to speak...

Abstract, yes I know, but that's what art teachers like

I will in fact also do a more rusty beaten up version. (for the section just before death

LITTLE BEE:
Thanks I agree, the lighting does subdue the textures somewhat, they have a totally different look when seen apart from the architecture... hmmm... well if I get the time I might play around with the lighting some more

awesome work. the textures are well detailed and they work real well with the level geometry.

about the textures:

the shadow casting from the metal looks as if it's forming to a flat surface, not the texture. so, i'm assuming you used something to paint over the brick with black.

try and use the dodge tool instead. the dodge tool will darken the actual brick, seemingly.

also, the textures that you use for the floor look to have too little detail when anti-aliased. i guess it would be nice to have more wear and tear on em'.

By themselves, they look like Photoshopy, bevely things sitting on top of a photographic brick image. There's just no real character to it. It needs a bit of grunge to it, IMHO. However, the cool level design does make up for it and the addition of the game lighting makes a difference as well. But if you ask me it looks like two elements thrown together that don't really blend as a whole.

As a texture artist for a failed game project I believe I know what I'm talking about. HA!

MAGIC ZERO:
"OMG thats cool"

Hehe, thank you very much

SOLAYNA:
"I don't usually like this kind of stuff at all but yours look wonderful."

I'm blushing here

XOR:
"The shadow casting from the metal looks as if it's forming to a flat surface, not the texture. so, i'm assuming you used something to paint over the brick with black."

Yeah I can see that to some extend. But I just have this thing against the burn tool. It easily skews the colors off in the wrong direction

The shadows are a mix between the dropshadow of PS and some handdrawn stuff to enhance it a bit. I never did get just what I wanted, but everything considered I think it's usable though. But I'll give the burn tool a try, just to make sure

NATHAN MARCINIAK:
"It needs a bit of grunge to it, IMHO."

Well I was going for a clean steel look, in these, so banging them up with scratches and rust would've sorta disrupted that idea.

I am doing a second set which is more banged up though, and I'll of course post that as well, what with the great feedback back and all

What failed game project was that? (Or can't you talk about it?)

Thanks for all the comments guys

add some rust and some weathering and you have one awesome piece of work. Damn cool.

I love Scotland - I lived there for while.

Personally I don't really know if I like Scotland all that much, but that's me

I come from Denmark originally.

Either way, as per request:

There's a couple more, but these are the basics.

Okaaay, some more textures for the set.

Doing work on the battered ones actually inspired me to do some different stuff that I originally had planned, I'll show you soon.

Uh, btw I used a lot of the photo's available over at www.digitalcraftsman.com. So credits fly his way. (Great sources!)

I needed another floor, so I went this way. Fits in well.

A less battered and rusted version of the one I posted yesterday. There's of course a small series of these.

This comes without the rivets as well, and I'll probably make a horisontal version as well.
