Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum. Here is my first post:

It's a color study I did in photoshop for a painting I'm working on in oils. Crits and comments always welcome.

Wow, this looks really good! I like the warm tones you're using. The face looks great but I think his pose looks a bit uncomfortable. As if he was having trouble sitting right and fitting into his armour...

That is amazing, you remind me of Rembrandt only you paint on computer. How do I get to be a concept artist like you, I would like to talk to you and learn from you. How long have you been a concept artist and how did you get to be one?

I'd venture to say that this is a series because of this great painting.

Stunning work, very warm, beautiful style, your lost edges are also great. I won't critique your painting because it seems you have a very definite direction which you would like to take it; and i don't see anything wrong with it.

::Sigh:: I feel kind of bad when I see work that's this amazing. I've stopped going to workshops because of work and other dumb excuses. I guess it's officially time to become a workshop-junkie.

Which teachers do you like more? which workshops do you enjoy the most (for both drawing and painting?).

Can you tell me whether you used painter to get some of those texture effects, if it was pure photoshop how did you go about doing that? Perhaps you could put up a tutorial (not an elaborate one, perhaps just your steps) to tell us how you did such a fantastic work, i'd love to learn a thing or two ! and i'm sure everyone else agrees your work is great. It has a great sense of life to it.

Any tips on doing a still life like the vase and grapes that you did ? I need to do one for this weeks painting class, and I haven't started yet, because I've been busy with my design work.

i'm just guessing, unless Molly can be a guys name too.

Anyways, great work, i love the warmth and style as well, no crit, you would know better than i as to what to do with your piece. unless you need additional direction, perhaps you ask one of your workshop teachers?

Sorry it took me a while to respond back. I didn't think I would get many responses for a first post!

Solayna- your right, the pose is a bit stiff. I want him to have that regal look, but if it looks awkward I need to fix that.

Defiant - Rembrandt is on my top 10 list..I'm far from a Rembrandt, but thanks.
I've been doing concepts for little over 2 years now, right after art school. Some skill, but mostly luck and timing got me the job.

Little Bee - yeah, Anthony figured me out

I'm a girl. I was told once, good female artists only paint pretty florals,children,and work for Disney. Most people see my stuff and asume a guy did it.

Anthony- I scanned in a charcoal drawing, I worked out from the photo reference. So, the texture you're seeing is some of the drawing coming through.

The grape still life: It's a small 5x7 oil on masonite. "Any advice? " Keep it simple

Post your assignment if you want some feedback.

Gouache is my favorite medium! Have you tried Acryla-gouache?

Anthony - Basically for this one, I scanned in the drawing and covered it up with 1-2 layers in PS. The drawing looks more like the photo ref.(sorry,I misplaced the photo otherwise I'd post it if you'd like.)

And if I may remark again on your talents: Holy God.

I'm always amazed that artists of your investment can create and recreate the same image in multimedia. Of course, that's probably just it: you're invested. I can't stick gum on a pencil twice. Have to move on, incapable of translation. :P

Anyway, for the colour roughs and lighting options, the computer is a fantastic tool. Especially when used with a sketching talent like yours ! Will you post the painting when finished ? please ?

SoMK - thanks! I think I'm the offical cheerleader for my friends, they don't promote their stuff so I do

I'll post the finish as soon as I get it done and get a digital camera. (too big to scan 3x3ft.) The image tdl pointed to is 3x5ft.! I don't usually paint so large, but once in a while I get too ambitious, and start something I never get around to finishing.

I origially posted this image in the hopes someone could tell me how I could indicate the chair he's sitting on, and also the legs look weird to me... it looked strange in the reference too.

wow that is excellent! love your palette and lighting, very inspiring.. Yeah it is quite spoogy style, suprised he hasn't come on this post loving your work.

I checked out the workshop site too, exceptionally talented artists there! hope you guys set up your webpages soon, really keen to check them out.
