Greetings.. i joined this forum a couple days ago after lurking and reading it for a little while. I'm glad to have found this place! It seems there are quite a lot of talented and helpful folks around here. I'm a freelance illustrator specializing in fantasy subjects, and digital painting (using Painter) is my primary medium.
Here's a rough sketch of a painting i'm about to work on for my portfolio. I'd love to hear constructive comments and critique on it before i delve into painting.. particularly in the areas of overall picture composition and the anatomy of the figure. Thanks in advance for any comments!

Hello,
Very nice drawing, everything looks in place. Only two crits, her butt looks a little strange, and I'd be careful not to make the composition too centric, maybe offset her a little to the side or make it a bit taller.
Also, is there a reason why both her knees are bent? is she going to kneel, or was she running fast and is stopping? I just stood in that position to try and get it ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

Hey dude,
This drawing is money.. Really, really nice. Good concept too, but the pose does look a little awkward.. I'm not sure if it's the position of the head and shoulders or the knees in combo with that.. Something looks a tad "unnatural".. then again, haven't ever seen a dryad in real life.. so that could be it..

Thanks for the kind words and feedback everyone. Yes it seems her pose is the biggest issue... which is probably due to me not thinking it through when i orginally drew it - this grew from just another quick sketch in the sketchbook. So... i've gone and re-drawn the entire figure.. with a more stable pose. Its not quite as dynamic but i think i like it better. What do you all think?

Hey Mike,
I thought that I would just say that I liked the first pose that you drew. I don't like the new one, it is kinda static lacks in expression. I would look at the first pose and the proportions that are used. The area around the adominal and the upper torso area, it seems unbalanced. Looks like it will be a great piece

I like the face/head better on the first one. maybe use the first one's upper body on the second one's lower body. |

I think the first pose is the better one but you should make her look like she was backing away from something... The problem is, imho, that the face lacks the expression the pose requires: she's too calm.
About the 2nd version: I think the straps that are holding up the upper part of her clothes are going to snap anytime now.. Better watch that when you draw big breasts ![](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) |

The feminine curves of the dyrad and those on the trees look very graceful together. I reckon that's the strongest part of your sketch.
I prefer the first post, too. Her face just looks more kind and young in that one. If you made the legs straighter, I think the pose would look more natural for her. |

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Honestly, now i'm torn between to the two versions. There seems to be somewhat more "energy" to the first one, but i kind of like the the more subtle stance of the second one too. Also i agree that the face on the first is a bit better.
Well, i'm going to be starting work on the painting today.. so i'll be deciding one way or the other. I might go in and try tweaking the first figure more... we'll see.
Thanks again for the input! ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Great sketches! Gnarly trees, voluptuous long haired babe clad in leaves - what more could one ask for? Personally I would use the head angle from the first and the body from the second. Although the 2nd has a lovelier face. Hope to see the finished product, whatever it may be.
The bent knees one would work, just draw her lifting some heavy suitcases! ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |
