The age old question, "should it be lighter, darker, more contrast, less?" I started this pic last night and have been noodling around with the colors, lights/darks too much and it's getting aggrevating, to the point that this image is a whole lot of 'no fun' anymore - I guess 'cause I had no real direction in mind when I started it. It began with just the girl (and a line drawing at that) and soon I began coloring it a little, kinda liking what was happening and colored some more - to the point that the big-fella in the back just 'emerged' out of the chaos that is the background. Now I kinda feel boxed in with regard to color and lighting.

I basically like the pic, it's much more developed than I'd anticipated, but it falls short due to my lack of fore-thought. I'd like hear what direction guys like Spooge would do in a situation like this - started somethin' like where it's goin', but the ground work that has been laid is flawed,...is there any saving it? Let me know. Thanks

Well, i don't think i'm worthy enough to comment on the color or contrast, but i do believe that this work rocks. reminds me of a dead-pool comic I've got.

well, i don't know what craig would say, but it looks like your problem isn't with color, and not even that much with contrast, it's your drawing. like with the girl's face, her nose is facing us, but the rest of her face is going another direction.
other than that this picture looks fantastic.

You're definately right on that Jr, one of the things I know I need to resolve,...I knew it was there and never got back to it - became much more caught up in the color n' lighting....Now of course that you mention it, it's the only thing I see

Speakin' of the drawing, that neck is WAY too long,...that should be a pretty easy fix though,...I'll tackle the stuff you mentioned and post an update. Thanks for the crit.

Gotta love the lasso & rubber-stamp tool,...here's a quick update on the head - it could still use some work, but I'm not too concerned with it as you'll never see it this close,...unless of course you zoom in

Jr - I had to laugh when I went to your site (awesome work, by the way), and went to your tutorial page, and I quote, "First off I start off with a neat little pencil drawing... This is the most crucial point of the entire piece. If the foundation isn't good, you'll be wasting your time, " Needless to say, I was tryin' to get away without doing it and hoping I could 'work-it-out' along the way. I know better, and I'LL NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!!

I lowered her head a little, but I still think it could be even lower, what do you think? The hair,... ....I still gotta work on it....thanks....

that looks amazing man. love the shirt folds, the big guys face and the slightly more finished gun parts... the compisition works as well. i dont think the neck is too long, maybe too thin, on her left side. just throw some hair over the edge=)

Hmm, I posted a huge, "let me have your baby"-esque appraisal, but it isn't appearing here... Lemme say again what I've had time to think about, heh heh:

THIS PICTURE IS GOD DAMNED BRILLIANT. Before, I mentioned how the lines lead perfectly from one element of the work to another -- particularly since you're putting a lot of detail into the faces and weapons. Vague design works very well here -- if it is your intention to "clean" the background, the definition in either character's bodies or any of the poses, PLEASE DON'T. What you've got is a finished piece of art in the guise of a semi-finished one. I doubt very much with your skill you could hurt it by doing more, but honestly it is so perfect now.

Consider this: Any half-done work is showing the abilities of an artist before and during his project (or rather, baby). Finished works are fine, but some get OVER-finished because the artist is too hard on himself. He feels like there should be more. In your case, we can see the talent pushing its way from the outer edges (sketched and Photoshop'd) into the center, where you get all kinds of wicked depth, a casual sense of creation... and that girl, in the first version you posted, is sexy in an Alyssa Milano way. It's got a mural quality. The whole things says, "Yeah, I made it, and I could for sure change it, but why?"

Love it.

Just my two cents.

well I like highlights (I know I overdid it)
I have no clue as to what could be at the bottom, but something wich could cast a meak secondary illumination could work I suppose...
