i traced over a photo, i�m coloring it completely(duh!)
please comment on my brushing

Hey probus i know what you mean about the comments going to the so called tallented artists, to be truthfull, i didn't really want to reply to this because it would have pushed my post down the list and eventually into oblivion. So I'll comment on this if you comment on mine, deal?

BTW i'm glad you fixed up that left eye from the first image, i dont have a tablet and i had never heard of one until i joined this forum, so i can't really comment on the brush work, but the shading looks good.

We all copy and trace sometimes, it's all part of the learning process, hell, even i've done it.

I suppose if you really want people to notice you could start being another 666flat, or you could post nude stuff. that always grabs my attention

hey. well ill post to thisif no one else will. well, i think its good. if ur learning, i think tracing isnt such a bad idea. i just got my tablet, and well i traced my first drawing as well. its excellent practice. as long as u dont try to pull it off as ur own, its all good. well, its lookin good, i still dont totally agree with the left eye, but hey, its not bad. good luck in the future, and all those big shot bastards jsut wont admit they once traced too. even if it was in grade school, who cares!!!!!

Here's my opinion on the subject: You don't learn much by tracing.

Some people maintain that by tracing you can just focus on the color and modeling of the forms without worrying about the drawing. But my opinion (as some of my teachers) is that by drawing you're doing exactly that, defining form; the color just helps out.

Even more important than color is value though. I forgot who said it, but "value does the work, color gets the credit". Fashion magazines and fashion pictures aren't very good reference for value, since they blast the models with light so they look beautiful.

Having said all this, here's my comment on your picture:

Nicely done, you put some work into it. I can't comment on your brushwork because you don't have any. If you want to have a brushy look, like craig mullins you've got to stay consistent with that style. If you want to have a rendered look like enayla, then you have to smooth the forms more.

The second picture looks alot better than the first. Most of what I would of told you about the first doesn't apply to the second picture. Good job.

Next thing is to start thinking about hard and soft edges. For example the bottom edge of her face (jaw line) it would be better if that was a soft edge, instead of that very hard contrast between the black and her cheek.

Work a little more on the eyes and the symmetry of her face.

Here's a big no no, _don't make stuff darker using black_, use colors. Shadows have a color, no matter how dark they are. In fact many shadows are pretty light.

Next thing you should do is stand up, get as far back from the monitor as you can, and look at it. That way you can see how the whole picture looks together, to see if the hands are the right tone in contrast with the face, or if you want to loose the hands completely in shadow (look at rembrandt).

I recommend that for a future piece do this: Take or find a picture that uses one light source, have this light source come from a diagonal position from the model. Then put the picture beside your monitor (prop it up with something), then work on it.

it's coming along pretty well. the shadow area between her neck and hair is way to black. Also maybe a darker color for the background might pop her and her dress out a bit.
