Yo,
everybody here's a new pic I'm working on. At this stage the drawing is done and I'm working on a color scheme. I'm inexperienced with this and have a tendency to pic bright 'comic bookish' colors. For example, I'll make a cloak red and pic a basic red. Then I'll give it a shadowed side and a lighted side. Next I'll make the shirt blue and follow the same procedure. It ends up looking like a friggin cartoon. The problem is in real life I've noticed that all colors share a connectedness under the same light source making all the colors similar (even when one is green and one is red).
You'll see in the pic that I'm trying and I haven't gone the usual route. I'll figure it out by experimentation and trial and effort but also thought posting it here could help things go a little faster. So, have at it:

damn man i like your drawing style very nice and very clean dunno much about colours becasue im in the same boat as u just starting out with the whole digital painting thing but just one thing
the dudes face seems a bit off like his nose or mouth or somthing well anywayz very nice go a web site or somthing with more of your work ?

no expert I am
but this topic is too heavy to explain the whole thing by some suggestions.
Jason Manley would probably say now "study the old masters"
and thats the best tip I can give you too.

Zoom-in in some pictures and you will notice how many different colors they used,
you will find tons of colors in just a little area of the masterpaintings,
and when you look from far away at them they kinda melt to one <---- and that's not only light it's the fact that different objects reflect different light on different objects...and so on.
Do a search on Jason Manley -he gave very good hints and tips over and over again on such topics

well i agree with silber and jason manley. you should study from the masters BUT.. and this is a big BUT... i am really digging you coloring so far. the tones look really well thought out. as a matter of fact if you make the rest of the image in those sof colors it would probably kick serious ass. (by "soft colors" i mean pastely)... i like your style too. it coud be a great illustration because it seems that there is a story to go with this pic.
would be very nice to see it finished. although in my opinion it's very close to being so.
