I've been looking to improve my "hand colored" works. Here's a piece I've been doodling with. I'm going to add a figure to the top of the stump, but want to get the color right in the foreground first.

Comments, crits, and suggestions welcome!

I really like the warmth of the whole thing. Nice magical feel with the colors. Are there supposed to be trees in the background, or just an abstract patter. Maybe work to get a forest behind there.

The colors work nice, somewhat complimentary, the light itself with the reflective glows on the roots is well played. The background, while not particular busy or forest like, still infers neighboring, and obviously less important/holy, trees.

Nice, looks good, apart from the grass around the roots looks nicly lit, but nery flat...

Thanks for all the advice, I'll try and post a revision in the next day or so (busy at work) As to specifics-

Vanhoozer- I was hoping to get a feeling of tree silhouettes in the backdrop. Perhaps adding some dimension to them would be a Good Thing.

Pangbiro- good call! That's what I get for working straight off the original ink sketch. Putting some stuff in the foresground will also give the opportunity for long, dramatic shadows.

At an interesting crossroads with this one now. Still working out the foreground elements, but the background is now a question. I tried 2 approaches, one more detailed, and a bit brighter, and one sticking with the silhouetted shapes. I'd be curious to hear what y'all think?

Actually, I love the first one better. The first one with more details is more intriguing and establishing of environment and perhaps storyline through the rendering of elements. It helps complete the picture and adds more realistic depth to it with the blurring-yet-detailed trees. The second one looks like a rough draft and not the next step in a more complete piece.

If you want story, my vote is for the first. ;} Beautiful, regardless. I can't wait to see future updates.

I think both are interesting. Did you on intentionally make the second one darker, because I think it works very well with the less detailed background. I think you should develop both of them.
What I would do for the first one is that there are some areas around the roots that were on a dark bg before and the glow worked. Yet now that they are on the lighter bg and it looks unsettling. Perhaps make it so that the top edges of the root are yellow rather than just a transparent layer on top.

What I would like to see in the second one is some of the glow from the tree stump to be reflected on some of the trees in the bg.
