(especially any advice on how i can stop the skeleton from looking so uh, "2d" against the background, or uh... maybe how i should paint "edges")

Cool beans.

I think the day of the dead brings out some amazing art... I'm hoping to make a show that is going on over the weekend. It's so cool.

Like your concept there. Is that going to be your final background? What would really help make it pop out of the picture is if you made the background darker. Also if you defined your lights and darks a bit more that would really help. Kind of like what you did with his robe, you have a much greater value change there than on the skull. If you're going to leave the background as it is, then for the edges just outline in it a slightly higher/lower value colour, depending upon which edge. Other than that, I think it is pretty cool have fun with it!!

jezebel: i got about a hundred little day of the dead models here, that a friend brought back from mexico... they all tell really cool little stories...

gothic gerbil : thanks for comments, i'll try your suggestions. especially about making a darker background, and fixing the head tones.

if anyone is interested, i made this in 3dsmax a few weeks ago (its kinda related to this post):

seethemd - Oh that sounds cool! I want some ^_^ I like your picture as well. I think I may have to do some Day of the Dead art myself now... it's such a great celebration.
