This is my first try at doing a more serious rendering of a head. I'm not happy with the result. Please be harsh - I really need to improve.

as for reference, none in particular. Just looking up anatomical details

Nice lighting but problems with perspective... The left side (her right) of the face should be smaller to accomodate the angle at which her head seems to be.
Oh yeah, and more detail on the hair - now it looks really thick and braidy.

Pretty nice. Better than what I could do. Anyhow, IS is right about the perspectives. You shouldn't be discouraged tho. It's just advices we as artist give one another. I like how you did the eyes. Mine always come out to look so manga-ish. You do have to detail the hair bit more, but I guess you will add those features when the image is done. I would like to see it. It is pretty good so far.

Apart from perspective which has already been mentioned, I'd say edit her left eye, (her view) because compared to the other one it looks lifeless...

Apart from that looks good...

well buyuu, I'm not known for portraits of women, but I'll try to give you what little guidance I can.

1) Be brave. It's a good start, and you've put a lot of work into it, but don't be afraid to go back and slaughter what you've already worked on. (hey it's a computer, work on a copy).

2) I would suggest going back and reblocking the basic forms, paying attention to changes in her neck, hairline, musculature in the face, and how her features line up around the curve of her face. Be sloppy until the features are in the right place; it's easier to redraw a rectangle indicating the eyes than the eyes themselves. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

3) For god's sake, get some values and colors in there! It looks washed out right now, like it's been baking in the sun for 5 years, or just went through the wash. Putting some very darks, very lights, and bright colors will really bring some life to the piece. You don't need a lot if you don't want - just a touch - but you need something. Of course, maybe it's my monitor, Mac monitors have a different gamma than PCs. Anyway, I went ahead and worked the piece a little more just for kicks:

Have a blast with it, and again, don't be afraid to really rework it. Pretend you're fixing someone else's work Lemme know if you have questions about all the above.
